The Line

Glenbrook South
Documentary

Entry Description

Since the game was invented quarterback's, running back's, and other skill position players have basked in the glory of football. However, for the offensive linemen, glory has never been apart of their job description. They create opportunity for offensive players to score, and when the offense scores it's the player crossing the goal line that is recognized. This documentary pays tribute to the unsung heroes of the game, the men who fight in the trenches of football. This is the Glenbrook South Offensive Line.

Positives: Great topic idea!! Linemen are so under appreciated. You only hear about them if they mess up. Nice way to incorporate different music into different intensity situations.

Improvements: The editing was a little weak. I saw a few jump cuts that could have been tightened up. When you are interviewing someone, try not to shoot completely profile. It looked like they were talking to a wall. You want them looking juuusssttt off camera. A little look goes a long way. If it was a creative decision, then to have that shot you almost need another angle to cut to, or a really dramatic backdrop. Finally. Although I loved the change of music with the pace, I think you should have chosen music more appropriate to the piece. While S.O.A.D is a killer band, I would have liked to hear more car-chase music, like that song from The Used in that car chase in Transformers or something. (I used an Atreyu song in my first big H.S documentary, and looking back, I wish I didn't)

Positives: The shots of the players on the field were captivating and beautifully executed. The last minute had the perfect music, best interview segments and footage to leave a memorable and lasting impression.

Improvements: The audio in the beginning was a little rough. I think some of the players could have spoken more clear or some segments should have been cut if you couldn't understand them well enough. In the beginning the music overpowered the interviews. Then in the middle the music totally cuts and then theres a very uneasy transition to a high adrenaline song that is pretty rough. I think that transition could be smoother.

Positives: Great variety of Broll. I liked how you showed practice, on the field and in the locker room shots. It really brought you in. Really good topic. Always good to take subjects that are unknown and bring them to light. Interesting topic even for non-football fans.

Improvements: Tighten up the edit. There were a couple jump cuts that were jarring. Also the music change to the intense metal song seemed too sudden and over the top. It took me out of the pre-established tone. Although I liked your b-roll I wish there would have been longer shots of the on the field plays to emphasize the full impact of a play and their physical role on the field. I felt you cut away too quick and couldn't see the result of their work.
