Entry Description

Zach Molina shows us how he took state as he plays the ivory as an Illinois All-State Musician.

Judge 1

Positives: I liked the subject. It was interesting to hear form a student who loves to play the piano. The close up shots of Zach playing the piano worked well.

Improvements: The viewer could not hear the piano playing. Only a few notes were heard. The overall film was not clear. It appeared to be a bit out of focus or the camera quality was not high.

Judge 2

Positives: Nice mix of photographs, interview, and live performance on his instrument. This has a clear message and storyline. Good soundwork.

Improvements: It's nice to interview someone as interesting as this young jazz musician, however I think his story was basic. It would have been interesting to hear if he improvises on the piano, how he chooses to express his chosen art form on the piano, and what his future aspirations may be. Does he plan to go to a university? Probably. Julliard? New England Conservatory? Northwestern Bienen School of music? Does he already perform in the city with any well known groups? I think it behooves us to dig deeper, especially since this topic IS so much deeper.

Judge 3

Positives: Casual setting defies typical image. Good support shots.

Improvements: More music samples woven into the story.
