  • 4/24 6:09 am - It is good to see video in the OTS’s instead of just still images. Overall, good show. New security system-Ruby-do not hold the mic with both hands, it is a sign of weakness. To look strong and assertive you want to hold it with a firm grip with one hand. Watch composition of the interviews. You want them looking in the direction of where there is more space. Good information in segment. Volo museum-interesting piece. Good use of b-roll. New sports conference - watch where you are since the person you are interviewing will look at you. When you interview Jeff, you should be sitting to the right of the camera. You are standing because we see him looking up above the camera in that direction. Vary where you get b-roll from. How many pieces of b-roll do you have of the runners at the exact spot on the corner. If you have more than one person on screen being interviewed, there should be a reason for it. If they all talk and interact with what is being said, that is fine. Otherwise have them individually on the screen.
  • 3/4 3:36 pm - Right from the start there is a bit of an awkward feel in terms of the on camera movement. The OTS has a person talking in it and is distracting as the anchor reads into the story. The OTS also fades at the end, just have it cut at the same time the package starts. The principal interview almost looks like the aspect ratio is wrong. The story is kind of a natural sound story, but there is a lot of dead space in there. It could've used a little less interview and a little more reporter helping guide the story. Coming out of a story feels like a cold transition. Maybe a little more interaction with the stories. The Volo story is shot very well and is interesting. I would love to have more of a direction of story and not just one interview. The CSL South change is a great story idea, but this story didn't really address the change and target the sports where the change might effect the most. Not sure how the snack soundbite really makes sense in this story. The idea of 3 people interviews at once isn't ideal in a news story because you really only hear one person talking at a time while the others uncomfortably look on.
  • 3/1 5:36 pm - Anchors could use a little personality- at first sight they looked like they didn't want to be there! A smile goes a long way! Weapons story had some awkward moments of silence when there maybe should have been a voiceover but there was nothing there. Auto story- make sure the interviewee is mic'ed up! You hear a lot of background noise without it!!! Interview was a bit long as the whole story was from that one guys voice and dragged on. Closing of the story had no mic either. Sports story- Awkward to have three people standing for an interview when only one person is talking. Do the interviews separately to get a better shot and use microphones! Ending of the show seemed abrupt- ease into it. Overall a good show!

Positives: Good choice of stories (although I would have put the sports package second and ended with the movie car package). The sound in all three pieces was great, BUT...(see below)

Improvements: Seems to be a choice to let the interviews run without hearing anything from the reporters once the packages begin. The school safety piece could have used more reporter voice over. same for the movie cars segment. and it was a huge missed opportunity at the end of that package when you have the reporter on the merry go around and all he does is sign off. He needed to say a line or two before signing off.

Judge 2

Positives: Big effort on interviewing multiple people especially in the third package. Love the insight others can add to a story. Love the idea of a standup in the second package! You may even consider adding one at the end as a 'look live' element and tossing back to the anchors with an outro.

Improvements: Anchors need to work on showing their personality. If you're intro-ing a story that's exciting, be excited and vise versa. The first package lacks flow in storytelling. The story seems very fragmented with separation in soundbites and lack of reporter tracking. From a viewer perspective, interest in what you're trying to communicate becomes lost. The second package could benefit from adding VO into the overall flow. A package CAN be done with just SOT...but you'll need additional interviews and nat sounds to make this doable. The third package, work on the interview camera setup. Don't be afraid to take your time setting up the camera shot for the proper looking room. As a newscast, collectively come together and decide on which low-third template you're going to use. Different low thirds from one story to the next can help break overall flow.

Positives: Good work including the student perspectives in the package on the new athletics conference. Very engaging – this is who your viewers want to hear from. Creative shots in the auto museum package, particularly the series of downward pans on the cars. Imaginative shots are appropriate for this type of light story; however, don’t let your creativity take away from the program’s credibility, such as the reporter’s sign off while spinning on the carousel.

Improvements: Along with the intro and outro of the news packages, voiceovers by the field reporters should be used in between the interviews. This would help tell a better story while helping prevent the interviews from becoming monotonous. Tighten up your shots and editing. For example, in the weapons detection story, we do not need to see so much of the offices of the principal and superintendent. Also, it was awkward when there was no audio except b-roll audio. Voiceovers from the reporters could have been used over this b-roll.
