  • 4/23 6:31 pm - Great job showcasing a variety of shots through your diverse types of work from traditional commercial work to music videos to creative experimental shots. You showed your ability to use light in a variety of challenging spaces and places as well as placing artificial light setups to accentuate your visual storytelling. You could easily lose the opening/closing to make it even more professional.
  • 4/23 9:41 am - Keepers: You have a lot of great imagery here! Really nice sample of your style and range, as evidenced through a variety of different lighting conditions. Compositions are strong; good balance to your frames (0:06, 0:11. 0:26, 1:11, 1:26, 1:28, 1:33). Your mix of narrative and non-fiction work blended together nicely, meaning you have a complimentary style that works well across genres. Use of natural and artificial light is strong as well. Good use of depth of field to create depth in your shots and draw focus to a specific place on the screen. Improvements: Opening dialogue is mono channel left (feels like a mistake). Not much to point out here, so a lot of the following comments are going to be nitpicky. Cat at 0:12 is a different frames rate than the opening shots and feels awkward. This happens again at 1:50 and is just off pace with the rest of your frame rates, so they stand out for the wrong reasons. Focus is really strong throughout your reel. The documents sequence is well done. The photo at 0:53 seems an odd choice for the focus to be on the nose, mouth, and ear and not the eyes. The eyes are where the story is told. The white balance on the train is very green and probably caused by the window tints; would have liked to see more control displayed here. This is a very strong reel and an example of lots of really good work! Keep up the good work!
  • 4/17 10:35 am - POSITIVES: Camera: Excellent variety of shots, compostions, angles & movements the demonstrates a high level of creativity. Fluency in manipulating focus is also evident. Great job exploring a character in a scene from a all sides and angles, and you're not afraid of the extreme close-up. Well done! Lighting: Reel includes natural and artifical lighting at a number of lighting levels that conveys moods and enhances the story. Editing: Excellent job-- really creative "story" that holds your reel together. AREAS FOR IMPROVEMENT: There's a small editing error at :58. Other than that, I can't think of a suggestion. Excellent work!
Judge 1

Positives: Good close-ups

Improvements: Greater variety of material would go a long way to captivate the judge here. Lessen the use of clips involving audio, that of course is not heard here, as a primary conveyance.

Judge 2

Positives: Good use of motion and variety in shots, color utilized well to emphasize the mood of the story, love the lens flares and match cuts

Improvements: Pacing feels a bit fast, some steadier pacing can allow for the visuals to sink in; some stabilizing is needed

Judge 3

Positives: It's hard to only pick 2! Your framing and composition is excellent throughout. I really love your opening shot, super dynamic, and grabs my attention right from the start. Your stylized "beauty" shots at 1:28 were lit really really well. Love the tighter composition and softer light.

Improvements: I think the shots of the person playing guitar on the train could either improve with some different lighting / composition. (I know it's a challenge on a public train.) It looks like you maybe filmed the cheerleading footage in a higher frame rate? If so, I think if you slowed that footage down it would've been a bit more captivating.
