  • 4/23 11:33 am - I think you story is good, I hear from players and the coach alike. I feel like each interview unfolds a little more of the story as it progresses which is good. As a natural sound package, you did some things I liked. I love you used natural sound bites between interviews to break it up so they all didn’t roll one into another (31, 47, 1:16) This is great because it give your audience a chance to digest what they just heard as well as break up your “plot points”. On the downside, while the interviews were going on I would have filled in lightly in the background your b-roll audio so the footage and story didn’t look so clean and sterile (while the coach talks you hear chatter in the background (probably from the original interview footage) when Stef talks there is no background noise, but I would have grabbed some from some B-roll to fill it in. When you edit an interview down (for time or to cut out unwanted statements), just make sure it sounds natural, sometimes they can get spliced so tight it doesn’t flow really well (1:34) Throughout your piece you have some B-Roll that moves in slow motion, I found it distracting (and it might just be me) but it seemed haphazard or like you were trying to stretch your b-roll as opposed to trying to get your audience to focus on something really great.
  • 4/1 1:08 pm - Fun way to start the package with the natural audio of them cheering! Katelyn’s sound bytes had some edits in it that didn’t sound natural (could hear where you cut it). Instead of doing that, ask the question again so that she answers it in a way that you don’t have to edit her response. It will sound much smoother. The sound bytes you chose were great for this story and told a good story. My suggestion would be to put a wireless mic on someone and use that audio to also help tell the story. This category is not just about the sound bytes that you gather and use to tell the story, but also about using the natural audio to help tell the story. Let’s hear the coach coaching the girls. Let’s hear the quarterback of the team calling the plays in the huddle. The interview shots were framed well and the b-roll did a great job of supporting the story. But use that natural audio to help tell the story other than just the sound bytes.
  • 3/5 11:31 am - Your interviews told a clear and concise story about the start of the girls flag football team at your school. I love the variety of b-roll you shot and the audio that came with it- coach whistling/coaching, girls passing, the huddles. We were able to see how much more there is to this team besides just playing! I like how you paused your interviews to let us hear what was happening too. Your final interview did discuss how uplifting this team was- I would have loved to have heard this in your NAT audio. Could you include next time a shot of the girls high fiving each other or giving positive feedback to one another? Great work overall!

Positives: Nice variety of shots. Good sound bites for the story and interviews are lined up nicely.

Improvements: Would love to hear more natural sound throughout the piece. There are times where the interview sound clips, add a transition to soothe it in.

Positives: Fun, natural moment to start the story! You found some great interviews for this piece. Love that you used a tripod. Shooting sports is not easy, but you did a great job of following the action. Your interview shots looked really nice. Nice job incorporating some fun slow-motion in this story.

Improvements: I really like how you covered some of your interview shots with video of the action on the field, but there needs to be nats underneath those shots. I would've tried to put a microphone on one of the players to help pick up those nats. I like the use of slow motion, but I think you could have been more intentional about its use. For example, maybe start and end the piece with those shots or dedicate a section in the middle of the story to slow-mo. That will allow those shots to stand out a bit more.

Positives: Good action shots. You followed the people running around well without shaky camera action. I like that you have more than two interviews. I liked hearing from multiple players.

Improvements: You don't need your interviewees to say their names and roles if that's already information provided in the lower third. Interviewers should repeat your question in their answer. So instead of saying "So it started with a meeting..." the coach could say "The way this team started was with a meeting"
