Entry Description

Documentary showcasing life on the westside of Chicago.

Positives: Definitely tells the story of the west side of Chicago. Interesting choices of b-roll to use.

Improvements: I get it, but I would have liked the camera work to be a little less "I forgot my camera was still rolling." I think some of those out of focus moves/slow mos/ and waist shots were artistic, but too many times made it look like bad camera work. I wouldnt have used all the guns and shooting and booze and stuff. I get thats how the west side is, but this is also a project for a high school. I would have recommended to tone it down and incorporate more story for a school festival. Save the gritty piece for real fests or the internet.

Positives: This was by far the most daring documentary out of the entire category. It's probably even too daring for this high school competition. I am shocked by the footage and conversations that he/she were able to get. My heart was racing and I was scared for the person shooting. The style of this documentary shows that this director has a very unique point of view. Every shot was dynamic and interesting. It was art and I hope this person continues along the film path. The voiceover explaining the title was insightful and powerful - it was the perfect way to end it. I commend the risk and the artistry that went into the making of this doc.

Improvements: At some point in the beginning it should tell us the location. I didn't know this was the westside of Chicago until I read the description. Most people that don't know Chicago will probably have the same note. I think the ending should be left silent and not have the RUN and gunshots. I'm not sure what that is supposed to tell me when the voiceover is so clear. I'd check the audio levels again because the music was loud and the conversations were low. I had to adjust my volume a couple times. I really liked some of the blurred shots but there were a couple that went on for too long (particularly the dog scene) and didn't rack focus quick enough. It messes with your eyes when it stays blurry for too long.

Positives: You showed a diverse range of composition with all your shots. Great camera work. Sometimes it could be too much but I thought it fit really well and added in the storytelling.

Improvements: Though I really enjoyed how raw the video was I feel it lacked a plot. Even docs have plots. The theme was very strong but there was no through line in the storytelling. Also the audio was really rough. It's ok to use it but I would suggest captions for the audience. I found myself having to go back to listen closely to what was said.
