Zack Jones profiles Valerie Schwarz, a high school artist, as she puts color on canvas and creates a dynamic painting that ultimately makes its way to Carnegie Hall in New York.
Positives: Camera: The shots at the beginning of the film were great. One felt like they were there watching an artist set up before painting. The close ups of the color mixing and painting were also effective.
Improvements: Valerie's voice was extremely hard to hear. My computer sound was at the maximum level and it still was difficult to hear her over the guitar. The music was too repetitive. I could not follow her dialog very well. It may have been better to have had someone ask a couple of questions to to have more of an interview feel rather than her just talking.
Positives: The light guitar music works when starting this video because it alludes to the passage of time, the artist setting up their work and beginning to develop their creative works. Her techniques were clearly represented. It's nice for the viewer to see her process as she speaks.
Improvements: There were times that the guitar music interfered with the artists' comments. I noticed it the volume would abruptly go up for two seconds and then become more muted. A gradual decrescendo would work, but this needs to be planned, or, change the music up, something with longer tones or perhaps something that also mimmicks water since that is the artists interest/mission with her works. The equipment that was used made the interviewee's voice sound a bit to nasal. I think that adding a little more alto to her voice would cause it to be softer. I felt like it was a taped interview at first because we didn't see her face until half way in.
Positives: Great transitions. Music compliments the creative action.
Improvements: Nothing.
