Honor Flight

Glenbrook North
Feature Story

Entry Description

This is a news packages from our school's student newscast. This story revolved around a group of local WWII veterans who participated in a program called Honor Flight. This organization flies veterans to Washington DC to honor them and a ceremony. Upon their return from DC our school organized a huge event to welcome these vets home and show them that even young people appreciate their service.

Judge 1

Positives: Great story great b-roll

Improvements: focus is soft on a few shots

Judge 2

Positives: Great selection of b-roll shots! The CU's in particular used great depth of field (i.e. flags), lending to a more cinematic feel to the piece. Great matching of sound bites to the VO. (Nervous to Excited) Excellent quotes from the returning veterans.

Improvements: Minor Notes: The audio, while clear, was imbalanced during a couple shots (Dr. Pryma is panned Left, instead of stereo) The b-roll during the description of the vets flying out to DC didn't seem to match (it was of highlighters and attendance records.) Even if you weren't able to get shots of the vets leaving, you might've included shots more suitable to your VO (i.e.: planes, stock footage of DC, or re-purposed some shots of the returning vets.) The idea is, your b-roll would be lock-step with yoru VO. All said, very well done.

Judge 3

Positives: This was a well constructed, straightforward piece. It told the story effectively and professionally. Great variety of shots and use of multiple cameras to capture key reactions from interview subjects.

Improvements: Pace of the piece was good, but could perhaps benifit from a subtle use of score and more energetic narration.
