Boys Cross-Country

Deerfield
Feature Story

Entry Description

Running cross-country is much more than a sport- especially when your coach is an ex-marine and an AP Psychology teacher.

Judge 1

Positives: beautiful camera work interesting panoramas

Improvements: sound inconsistency with live shots and voiceover

Judge 2

Positives: Good use of quotes and sound-bites that serve to tell the story of the team's commitment & the coach's inspirational team-building words. Good to report on and hear about athletes/teams that put in a whole lot of work and don't seem to get the attention and glory that other sports/teams receive, like football and basketball.

Improvements: The interview sections were taped with a pretty wide camera shots. The camera could zoom in a little for a MCU - medium close up that would still give you room for a lower-third identifier but not have so much landscape around the interview subject. Even though the setting for the drill/training was good footage, some still shots or footage of the team in an actual cross-country meet would add more visual interest to supplement the report so it doesn't look like the whole thing was shot in one day at one location.

Judge 3

Positives: The timing of the segment and how it was edited was excellent. The voiceover had a solid delivery. Good pacing and easy to understand. Great selection of soundbites resulted in good storytelling.

Improvements: Incorporating close up shots of faces would have been an improvement. B-roll of the coach interacting with the students would have been a nice addition
