This public service announcement focuses on the dangers of pulling all-nighters and the serious effects of drowsiness through the eyes of a high school student.
Positives: The timelapse technique was great in showing the passage of time. The use of sound effects and having the visual of time passing helped tell the story and provide context to the subject. Nice job showing the cause and effect of the subject.
Improvements: Some of the shots could have benefitted from color correction or brightening up the shot. Quicker cuts would have helped the piece flow better and keep the viewers attention. Aside from getting a good nights rest, anything else that could have been listed as a call to action?
Positives: The story of this PSA was well done. It has a good set up of staying up too late and then showing the consequences of those actions. Nice job. The use of sound design, of using audio to help with each chapter of the story, helped advance the story. The audio worked nicely along side the camera work.
Improvements: I think some of the editing could be tighter. The driving sequence at the end could move faster. Either cut some of the shots or have them go quicker. The slower speed of the shots currently, made it easier for me to predict what would happen next. Because the PSA is about the dangers of driving with little sleep, as drivers will be slow to predict what might happen on the road, I think the driving sequence would work better if it moved quicker. The lighting when the alarm clock goes off probably should’ve looked drastically different than the lighting overnight. Making it look like the sun is rising and shinning directly into the room would be a great visual way to reinforce the passage of time.
Positives: Basic foundations of visual storytelling really strengthen the video: the time-lapse, lighting from staying up late at night to the bright morning...these are simple yet effective storytelling techniques to address the risks of staying up late when it comes to the next day.
Improvements: The final cut to car crash can play off unintentionally comedic given the actor's reaction. Cutting back and forth between the driver in the car and the wide exterior shot of the car also pulls away the momentum of the story at such a climactic part, being the car crash. Granted, it's a hard scene to pull off given the low budget but perhaps some slight editing and acting changes could enhance this scene.
