4/23 4:12 pm - I know the story was about gymnastics, but beyond that it didn’t seem to have a focus, the coach spoke, two girls spoke but I didn’t necessarily see how they were connected. For example, you first interview was about the mock meet practice, which made me feel like the story was going to be about the meet. When instead you got into all the “whys” of why they do gymnastics it felt disjointed ( I would have led with all the whys) Since this is a natural sound package I would work at putting in more gymnastics sound for example clapping your hands after caulking up, a coach yelling out encouragement, someones feet coming down on a landing. Tereza’s and Zofia’s interviews took place in the hallway like they were on their way to class, next time try and catch them more in their element (in uniform at practice) again it will provide some synergy for your story. Try and add more variety of shots, most of your story/broll were wide cover shots, that is what made the unique and close up shots of the balance beam at 17 and 111 more of a breath of fresh air, so be intentional about more closeups of hands, feet, faces after they land, etc. Let that last scene play out a little longer, since it is a natural sound package, you cut the scene before the sound went away on its own which made the end abrupt. The shot was perfect, the timing of the cut was just too soon. You have most of the pieces you need just work at adding a few more and you will see your story dramatically improve.
3/25 6:56 am - Good start to the story with the coach, but put a mic on her during practice - it’s a great way to hear her talk to the athletes and have that sound be crisp and clear without any other distractions. No need for the graphic right at the beginning. When you put a lower third on someone, it needs to stay on the screen for about 4-5 seconds so that the viewer has time to read it before you then cover your interview up with b-roll. Once you’ve put that lower third up once, you don’t need to have it on the screen again. At :30, we see b-roll, but that lower third is still on the screen. If the interviewee is not on the screen, we shouldn’t see the lower third anymore. Tereza’s lower third - Sophomore is misspelled and her interview is a bit out of focus. No need to go back to her at 1:06-1:07 - cover that up with b-roll. Zofia’s interview is out of focus and Sophomore is misspelled on her lower third. There’s a flash frame after her interview. We heard the natural audio from the b-roll at the very end. How can you use the natural audio throughout the story to help tell the story? That’s the purpose of this category - it’s using the natural audio to move the story forward or to help tell the story rather than it being told 100% by the people being interviewed.
3/4 11:33 am - I loved your opening shot and how I could hear your coach giving feedback to your team. You had a great variety of b-roll and I especially loved the close up of the feet on the balance beam. For your interviews, I would have your subjects look towards the empty space of the frame. This will make your project look even more professional. Since this is the NAT audio category, I also wanted to hear more sounds- I'm wondering if you could put a mic close to some of the equipment so we could hear some of the sounds they make more clearly. I loved your closing shot as well- this was a great way to end and I loved to hear the cheering.
