  • 4/23 3:53 pm - As a natural sound package you had some great shots, and great sounds I think you really nailed it. The editing was good, and generally your b-roll supported what was being said. If there was a flaw it was that I never really knew what the story was about. It needed some type of introduction so I could gauge the rest of the interviews and feel like I know what the objective of the story was (you just jumped right into training, instead of someone saying why they were a fire fighter, or how tough it really is etc). Obviously I can figure it out, but your story will have more impact if your audience knows where it is going instead of being dropped in the middle of it and trying to figure it out.
  • 3/25 7:05 am - Great story idea! Good start with the natural audio of the lake rescue. It was hard to discern where that natural audio ended and the audio from the person speaking began. Have more of a natural pause in between the 2 - bring the natural audio from the first clip down before that sound byte begins at :06. Good use of natural audio pops in between sound bytes. Seeing firefighters around the table during a meal would have been a nice touch to go with the part where he talked about it. Then hearing 2-3 seconds of that table talk would have been a good natural audio pop. There was time in this story to let things play out a bit more, as the story felt rushed. So many great elements here and great opportunities for natural audio to tell the story. Take that opportunity and let the story breathe a bit.
  • 3/4 11:31 am - This was such a cool topic for a news story! I loved the variety of b-roll you shot. Your opening shot was especially impressive and it drew me in as your viewer. I immediately wanted to know more and continue watching! My only complaint was that your opening interview was a little hard to hear under this. I would wait to start this interview so that we can fully take in the sound and visual of that rescue shot. I loved hearing the different sounds of the firehouse. My only suggestion is to spend more time framing your interviews. Some didn't follow the rule or thirds or looked shaky or had too much headroom. This overall took away from the professional look of your project. Take the time to set these shots up in the future!

Positives: Great opening shot with the person in the ice. The speed of the story flowed well with the high intensity of the job.

Improvements: Incorporate some more tight shots. Let the last shot be on camera for a second or two lnger before fading to black.

Positives: Great opening shot! What a way to capture the viewer's attention and get them to pay attention. Great sound with all the firefighters. Loved that you talked to the guy as he was doing sit-ups. Nice job capturing a variety of activities happening the firehouse.

Improvements: Next time, work on your sequencing. You had some nice shots (like the opening shot of the training exercise) but I wanted to see more variety. Show me wide, medium and tight shots in sequence. I liked the sound of the guy doing sit-ups. Could you have put a mic on him or one of the other trainees? That way, you could've captured clean audio of him huffing and puffing as he was doing all the different training exercises.

Positives: *Very visual story! The visuals really captured the essence of the firefighter training. *Effective sound bite at the end of the story. Creative to interview the firefigther as he was training. That made the story very active. Also that sound was a nice way to end the story as the firefighter explained why he is a firefighter.

Improvements: The only improvement suggestion I have is to rethink the placement of the sound regarding the meals in the firehouse. That portion of the story interrupted the flow about training. Otherwise this was a very strong narrative and as mentioned above a very visual story taking viewers inside something they may not ever see. Great job!
