  • 4/24 9:07 am - Keepers: Nice theme for your reel. It allows for some thoughtful compositions and for your subject to pontificate within the frame. The low-key night interior setups were a bold choice and hard to pull off. You did a nice job incorporating practical lighting sources into your compositions, from the string lights to the cell phone glow. Improvements: Although your concept is creative, it's limiting in demonstrating a wide range of camera and lighting skill. Low-key night interior is only a small sliver of shooting environments a cinematographer encounters. The varying white balance between the practical string lights and the cell phone could have matched better. You have some rolling shutter issues with some of your lights, particularly in the kitchen (0:40, 0:46). Be sure your lighting source has a refresh rate that compliments your shutter speed. Try to keep your exposure consistent within the same scene. There are varying amounts of noise from ISO adjustment rather than adding more light. Depth of field is very shallow in wide open scenarios. The shot at 0:07 has sharp focus on the star light and the character in the scene is soft.
  • 4/17 10:57 am - POSITIVES: Camera: Shows a range of camera shots and compositions, plus a bit of camera movement. Shows creativity in concepts; Lighting: Low level lighting is handled well, with creativity in designing shots variable light sources. Editing: Story elements are creative, with shots overlaid as memories the actor is reviewing on screen. AREAS FOR IMPROVEMENT: Limited range in camera movement or angles demonstrated. Adding daytime shots that manage natural light would show a greater range of camera fluency.
