How to Fry a Turkey - ID# 178

Glenbrook South
Comedic Narrative

Entry Description

Two overconfident backyard cooking hosts attempt to film the ultimate turkey frying tutorial. When they ignore basic safety rules and drop a frozen bird into boiling oil, their cooking segment erupts into a full-scale disaster. Told through frantic footage, drone shots, and news commentary, the film satirizes internet tutorials. What begins as a simple recipe becomes an explosive disaster about ego, and why you should probably just order pizza.

Clever reveal of the house fire via drone news report. The background music didn't really make sense during a news report. Nice shout out to the local pizzeria. Fire effects looked good.

Positives: The ending sequence was incredibly fun and well executed. The VFX gave it a huge "wow" factor and felt like it had a clearly defined purpose for the narrative. Amazing work. Visually the short looked great due to good lighting, crisp camera quality, and clean cinematography. I like the coloring as well.

Improvements: Although I imagine this is meant to replicate a YouTube video format, I would of loved to have scene more shot variety during the beginning cooking part. Instead of keeping on a tripod wide shot you could throw in some smooth handheld shots of closeups to show more of the action. Conversely, some of the handheld shots during the fire chaos were slightly too shaky. Could be improved by using just a little bit less shake to avoid making the viewer dizzy.

Positives: Very funny. Very clever. Useful resources. And very puzzling. Starts out very serious and erupts into chaos. The visual effects were also very impressive as well because they aided the story. Also the music of Fleetwood Mac at the end was a nice, light hearted touch.

Improvements: I would throw a disclaimer up about trying this at home. My girlfriend’s garage with all of her dark room photographs went up in smoke because they tried to deep fry a turkey. Again, just a subtle nod as to why you should try this home. But I think the humor kind of dictates that. Great job!

Positives: Really impressive use of special FX shots and news graphics in the finale. This looked like it was a ton of fun to make! I hope you keep making movies!

Improvements: I think you would've have a tighter payoff if you had cut to the news segment a lot earlier. Maybe only showing a bit of the chaos starting up, and then pivoting to the live news coverage.
