Positives: The segments throughout the newscast, such as the Black Student Union message, trivia and Movie Minute, were creative, and their variety certainly engages the audience. Having one of the anchor speak Spanish was innovative and sent a strong message of inclusion. This was the first time I’ve seen this in an entry.
Improvements: While the anchors delivering announcements were professional and the sports report was solid, the newscast overall needs some polish to make it a more cohesive program. One element that would help with this would be more consistency in the color, font and animations used in the graphics to create a package that is used throughout the newscast. The newscast could have benefited from some storytelling. In addition to delivering announcements and the creative segments, try adding a news package with a reporter telling a story about the subject. For example, a reporter could have interviewed the Black Student Union members and told the story of why being a member of this organization is important to them. Storytelling engages the audience.
Positives: Very good open, the whole show is well shot and directed and having the one anchor speak in Spanish is a great element.
Improvements: On the charity drive story it would have been better to show the reporter at the top and bottom - instead of continually cutting to him and seeing him look down at his script. I liked the 24 hour run story but if youre doing that story, there's no need to have mentioned it earlier in the list of charity events coming up. also could have used some more information (unless this one of those events that is so iconic at the school that everyone knows about it)y
Positives: Bilingual Content: Great job incorporating bilingual content—this demonstrates an awareness of the needs of your diverse school body and helps make the content more accessible. Charity Drive Story: The use of Carol’s Cookies visual with the Gaussian blur and added motion was a nice touch, which made the segment visually appealing. Spots Segment: The standup shot was clean and crisp, with good lighting on the curtain. This was a well-executed shot, enhancing the overall production value.
Improvements: Charity Drive Story: Confidence in Delivery: Consider memorizing some of your lines or ad-libbing a bit to fill the gaps. Referring to the sheet in front of you can give off the impression of a lack of confidence, which can detract from the professionalism of the delivery. Instead of returning to your standup, consider covering up your track with additional voice-over (VO) of the events that took place, such as the "pie a teacher" or "chili cookout." Extending these clips could make the story more dynamic and help cover up the standup without interrupting the flow. 24-Hour Run Piece: Context and Interviews: The promo was fun but felt thrown together. The text on screen was generic and didn’t match the rest of the show’s theme. Consider interviewing someone involved in the event to provide more context on what the 24-hour run means and why it’s important. This would add depth and relevance to the segment. Trivia Piece: Setting and Composition: Consider doing the charity trivia in a more controlled setting, like a sit-down with a select group of students, rather than during lunch hour. Lighting: Avoid backlit areas when filming individuals for a cleaner look and better production value. Sports Segment: Neutral Attire: While wearing an IOWA shirt is fine, it might be better to avoid wearing team-branded apparel during the sports segment. Consider wearing neutral clothing or your high school branding to maintain professionalism and avoid showing preference.
