Entry Description

This cinematography reel took me a whole year. I shot footage of nature and the outdoors starting last spring, throughout summer and fall, and ending in winter. Editing was even more difficult, because I had so many beautiful and amazing shots of nature, but ultimately I had to make a lot of tough decisions and cut out a lot. I'm proud of the final result and of the experience I gained using a variety of different lenses and camera settings to meet my challenges.

  • 4/17 3:58 pm - This reel shows some strong cinematography skills. Although you confine this reel to natural light and nature itself, it is a little bit limiting, along with the relatively short runtime, to display the breadth of cinematography skills that really shine in a reel like this. We would like to see more of your work.
  • 4/15 8:57 am - PROS - Beautiful Use of Natural Lighting – (0:08, 0:32) The reel includes several shots where light interacts naturally with the landscape—sun flares, side light on foliage, and cloud backlighting that all create cinematic visuals. 0:32, with the silhouetted tree against a golden sky, is a standout. Peaceful and Consistent Tone: The visuals throughout create a calm, observational mood, fitting for a nature reel. The audio and editing reinforce this meditative tone without distraction. IMPROVEMENTS - Lack of Human Subjects: While this is clearly a nature reel, its usefulness as a cinematography submission would be greatly enhanced by including some human elements—whether as figures in landscape, interacting with nature, or acting as visual anchors. Shot Diversity and Technical Challenge: The reel favors static or slow-pan scenic shots. Adding dynamic movement (gimbal walk-throughs, time-lapses, or aerials) could show broader technical range. OVERALL - This piece is a visually pleasing nature reel with strong photographic instincts, especially regarding natural light. To elevate it as a cinematography submission, consider adding human elements and demonstrating more technical diversity—like artificial lighting, movement, and a broader shot variety.
  • 4/9 8:12 am - With an edit named "Seasons" that starts with cicadas in the summer I was anticipating a second minute of content to bring it full circle to all four seasons. Would have loved to see more of your work as you did a nice job with your framing, rac focus and use of natural light. A second minute to showcase more of your range and ability would have helped your entry.
