This is an excerpt from the final minutes of an incredible basketball game. The crosstown rivalry between Lyons Township and Hinsdale Central came to an incredible conclusion with a clutch buzzer beater from half court.
Positives: The replays here were definitely the highlight. Good job using every angle to your advantage on this big moment and slowing down the clips. If you can, try to show these back to back rather than going in and out of replay for each one. Great dynamic cutting sequence here to show the student section and make the moment feel special. One thing to think of next time is getting a close up of the player after the basket and replays to show his reaction.
Improvements: Audio was the biggest issue during this clip. For announcers, while it is totally okay to get excited, make sure to keep the annunciation and level of your voice consistent. Raising your voice too much can cause audio levels to get to high. There is a difference with getting excited and simply yelling into a microphone. From a behind the scenes side, make sure to keep an eye on levels and adjust the announcers as needed. Game cam often fell behind and let player/ball get out of the frame. Make sure to be dynamic in your framing and keep up with the pace of play at all times.
Positives: - Getting the gift of an exciting finish obviously makes a great game, but it still takes a great crew to cover the moment well, and you did that. Really great camera work and good job by the director of using all of your resources to show the excitement, stay in the moment, and then when appropriate go back to replays to show the shot again. The flow of this was exceptional. - The two handheld cameras did exceptional work in their job of tracking the ball and then also immediately pivoting to capture the emotion of the moment.
Improvements: - For announcers, moments like these can be hard. It's natural to get really excited, and to an extent, we the viewer WANT you to be excited. It helps make the moment feel bigger even though we aren't there. BUT - and this is important - when you raise your volume level to an extreme, you essentially overwhelm the microphone in your headset to the point we really can't understand you at all, and that detracts from the moment a bit. A very valuable tool to understand is how to convey excitement without just increasing your volume level.
Positives: Great camera work. I really enjoy the close ups and shot variety. The camera people knew exactly what to focus on during the chaos. great instincts in a crazy moment. The announcers were very entertaining. They were great at conveying the excitement and emotions of the this game. If a team hits a buzzer beater, the announcers BETTER be freaking out and going crazy. That's what the audience wants!
Improvements: Sound had some major issues. There was a lot of peaking and/or popping. Obviously this was very rare and unexpected buzzer-beater moment... But the moment would have been even better if the audio was good. I don't blame the announcers (and fans) for screaming. But I think you need to test the mics before hand by screaming into them and finding the right levels to prepare for crazy moments like this... There was also some popping / peaking before the buzzer beater moment. Directing: Right after the buzzer beater, the camera was cutting a little too fast in my opinion. The fans storming the court speaks for itself without cutting to different shots that fast.
