Entry Description

This is the refugee story on my mom, Marina Schultz. It follows the beginning of the Bosnian war all the way to when she came to America. Its a powerful story that brings awareness to what it really means to be a refugee, start over, and staying resilient through it all.

  • 4/30 4:33 pm - + nice interview setup. Good use of archival photos, interesting story - It is always best to have more than one interview in a documentary. Put the cable for the lav mic under the person's shirt.
  • 4/26 9:24 pm - KEEPERS: A very emotional story told via a primary source in interview. The set up of the interview and it's production value was quite strong. The music was also emotionally appropriate and well mixed for the piece. IMPROVEMENTS: More broll was needed. I'm assuming that all of these photos camer from the family. Intersperse archival television footage with these photos. This will give a lot more visual power to the piece as a whole. There were a lot of jump cuts in this interview and typically no jump cuts should ever be visible in a documentary. That's why you needed more broll to cover up those edits. Watch the pacing of your editing. At times the photographs were on and off screen too quickly. Same thing with your interstitial text. The general rule with text is that it should on screen long enough for you, the editor, to read it aloud slowly. Work a bit more on your zoom effects as well. They weren't always fluid. On the whole, the foundation of this documentary is very good. It needed more polish both in broll acquisition and post production.
