Oui ou Non - ID# 21

Lyons Township
Dramatic Narrative

Entry Description

I've been very influenced by Wes Anderson's films, so I tried to capture the vibrant color palette and somewhat surrealistic mise en scene of his films. This short story is about two friends who have different ideas about what defines their relationship. It's a little bit sad, a little but funny, and I hope something that makes an emotional connection.

  • 4/21 7:38 pm - This was very fun and delightful, reminiscent of a lot of French New Wave films – particularly the work of Agnes Varda. The music and narration was well executed, but more on-location sound and other sound effects could have elevated it a level up in the competition. In general, it feels disappointing to audiences to see dialogue being spoken and not hear it. Overall, the camerawork is well executed with thoughtful shot selection, composition, and exposure. However, I am sure you are aware that the color correction at 0:40 is quite off and too magenta – if you struggled fixing that shot, I would suggest simply cutting it – there was no need to go wide story-wise and a slight jump cut would have looked less like a mistake and perhaps even stylized. The use of natural and indoor lighting was well executed, and I thoroughly enjoyed the colors present. You have a style that is impressive and a joy to watch, and the story was moving. The real thing holding this back was the lack of on-set sound and dialogue – but keep up the great work! Also, side note – what a nice French lesson! I would strongly recommend sharing this with your school's French teacher if you haven't already.
  • 3/8 2:47 pm - Pros: The story was very unique. Good use of some different camera shots. I like the vibrant colors along with your editing. Cons: Some camera shots were tough to see and it drew me away from your story. To me, this felt a bit more like a school project of somewhat with you not using any dialogue, and just the narration of the few words you chose in the film. Overall, it was a nice video though! The bloopers at the end drew me out of the story as well.
  • 3/5 10:09 am - I can totally see what you were after: the colors are vibrant and the composition is very Wes Anderson. The story is a little lacking though and the fact that the actors are talking and I do not hear the dialogue is not helping. Covering it all up with music just makes it less engaging.
