A portion of GBN Broadcasting's live coverage of Glenbrook North Boys Basketball's match versus Niles West. The event took place on 1/28.
Positives: The announcers were very informative and provided commentary that was easy to understand and didn't talk over one another. The director did a good job cutting cameras during free throws to keep the viewers entertained during lag of gameplay, seeing close-up shots of the free-throw player and crowd reactions always help with this.
Improvements: The audio was a little bare with only having the announcers doesn't create a soundscape that keeps the viewers well immersed in the game. Simply by adding just an additional open mic pointed at the court will help by bringing in the natural sound elements (crowd cheering, squeeks of shoes, the ball bouncing on the floor, etc) can all be picked up by using little resources. The main wides-shot following the ball shooting gameplay was a little too tight, by zooming out more the operator doesn't have to adjust the camera so much creating a smoother experience for the viewer. During the last free throw, the camera that was shooting close-up of the player was great, but the director needs to cut off prior to the ball leaving the players hands back to a shot that will show the ball going into the basket or not.
Positives: - Good job by the director to work in your various camera angles during down time. One really important note, though - when shooting free throws it's great to see a tight shot of the shooter but we also need to see the shot - so make sure you're switching back to your game camera before they shoot so we can see the ball and if it goes in!
Improvements: - Watch the framing on your game camera. There were times when we lost the ball completely - it's really important for the game camera to always maintain the ball.
Positives: Good use of crowd video. P-B-P announcer was good and excited.
Improvements: If you’re going to show the crowd, then make sure audio follows. Having crowd excited without audio loses the effect. Director could use the close-up camera more frequently. Generally, that camera does more work than all of the others. Director’s job is to create excitement even when the game is slow. Color announcer needs to realize that his responsibility is to fill in between action with comments and facts.
