Right away, I could tell that the setting was a tattoo shop, which helped establish the environment for the viewer. The interview is well framed and follows the rule of thirds, keeping the subject clearly in focus. I also like that the background of the tattoo shop is visible behind the interviewee, which adds authenticity and helps reinforce the setting. The b-roll includes a good variety of wide shots and close-ups that support what the interviewee is saying and help visualize the story. Areas of Growth: In this story, the only natural sounds we hear are the tattoo needle and the door opening. Since this is a natural audio category, it would have been great to include more ambient sounds from the environment. For example, you could capture moments such as the owner checking someone out, conversations with customers, or the sound of someone flipping through tattoo design books. Including more of these details would strengthen the sense of place and make the audio experience even more engaging.

Charlie did a good job telling his story, and you did a good job breaking up his main idea’s by putting in some b-roll in between each of his topics - that gave your audience to digest what he just said. I appreciated your cuts to b-roll while he was talking. The one problem is your topic doesn’t lend itself to much visual b-roll, and definitely when it comes to sound, there really is just one natural sound that we keep hearing over and over again. Use a lower third key to help introduce your character. It would have been cool to hear from a customer or see some pictures of some of his art.
  • 4/29 6:52 am - The purpose of this category is to not only have natural audio in the news package, but to use that natural audio to help tell the story and move it forward. With this story, how can you do that? One suggestion would be to put a wireless mic on the owner and then record him working with a client. Let’s hear him talk to a client about a tattoo idea, hear him talking with the client while he’s creating the tattoo, etc. What natural audio pops can you put in this story? There’s obviously the tattoo machine itself - let’s hear audio pops of that in between some of the sound bites (like you did from :26-:28). What other sounds do you hear consistently in a tattoo place? Bring those full for 2-4 seconds in between sound bites. All of these examples are what helps to tell the story - not just sound bites. Keep the natural audio from your b-roll in the story, but keep it low when we’re hearing the sound bites. For example, from :16-:25 we see b-roll but hear no natural audio with it. Then at :26, we hear it with that shot. It should be in the story all the time - just adjust the levels when you want it to be a natural audio pop.
