  • 4/23 11:31 am - So I think you did a good job of using natural audio to draw your audience in, you grabbed sound bites that didn’t seem out of context or out of place between interviews, which can be hard to do when you are covering a “play” (because some lines require to much set up to understand). You have a good eye for finding those bites to draw your audience in with the sounds and visuals. As a news story, I felt like your story wandered a little bit, it started off about the play and seemed to be about what “Clue” was about, but then your story seemed to morph into why everyone loves theatre so much at GBS. I heard three different people talk about what a great “community” it is, but if your piece was about the fall play, it strayed too far from the initial objective of the story which was about the Fall Play “Clue”. It is ok to talk about the community, but it was to much (just take one of the community interviews) and detracted from your original objective
  • 4/1 1:09 pm - Loved hearing from the cast members about their experience with this play. The audio that was brought full was a good part of the story and helped to tell the story. Be sure to let the viewer hear a little bit of the audio from the rest of the b-roll that is playing during the SOTs. That’s still important to telling the story - don’t need it loud enough to overtake the SOTs, but should still hear it while the b-roll is playing. Watch the lighting on the interviews - I would suggest bringing a portable light with you to light their faces a bit more. This will help to reduce any shadows from any of the regular lights in the spaces where you did your interviews. Great job incorporating the video with the graphic at the end of the story.
  • 3/5 11:32 am - Your interviewes provided clear context for what this musical was about and the community that is formed from being part of the show. I love how you paused your interviews so that we could hear what was goin on on stages. I love to hear you layer your music from the stage below some of your interviews to keep the pace flowing. When the final students begin talking about community, this was something I wanted to see and hear more of. Between the two interviews in which community was discussed, we saw another shot of students acting on stage. I would have loved to have seen and hear more of students just hanging out together at rehearsal and supporting one another.

Positives: Nice wide shot to introduce the play. The audio is smooth and flows well.

Improvements: I wish I heard the doors opening and closing in the background under the interview. Would like to hear more nat sound throughout the pice.

Judge 2

Positives: Nice job incorporating some nats from the play in the story. I like that you interviewed several members of the cast. You got some really great sound about what being part of that production meant to them! Love that we saw some of the rehearsals along with the actual performance. Fun closing shot!

Improvements: I like how you covered some of your interview subjects' sound with shots of the performance and/or rehearsals, but I didn't hear any nats from those shots. Next time, add an audio layer underneath your interview subject's sound so you can hear the natural sound that comes with the video on screen. Your interviews looked a little dark. If you didn't have your own light, I think you could've taken advantage of some of the lighting on stage to make those interview shots pop. Nice job!

Positives: Really great dynamic shots from the play. I could tell you spent a lot of time with them. The interviews flowed really well into each other. The characters were animated and compelling and gave great soundbites.

Improvements: The composition of the interviews needs a little work. Gabe is looking way too far off-screen, while Meredith is looking directly at the camera. They should be looking just slightly off-screen, almost like a 3/4 view. There's too much headroom in Gabe's shot, too. I would have loved if the natural sound was included in ALL clips, including when someone is giving an interview. You just need to keep it quiet enough not to distract us from the interview. Doing this makes the transition to the b-roll clips less jarring and shows true mastery of audio mixing.
