  • 4/29 12:40 pm - This reel showcases lots of different situations genres camera angles lighting conditions and so on. The editing of the real would have made a bigger impact if it interspersed the different genres and styles throughout rather than grouping them at the beginning. Nonetheless this is an impressive reel!
  • 4/28 3:06 pm - You have a nice collection of shots here that really demonstrate your ability to engage with a wide variety of spaces. I noticed that the second half of your reel is significantly stronger than the first; the opening shots felt a bit flat compared to the rich details, high contrast, and deep color of your more dramatic work later on. In a top-scoring reel, consistency is key. My advice for your next entry is to lead with that rich, dramatic work immediately to set a high bar, and then work on bringing that same level of contrast and color depth to your 'flatter' scenes so the whole reel feels like it belongs in that elite bracket.
  • 4/6 9:46 am - PROS The reel demonstrates a strong command of natural lighting and landscape cinematography, particularly in the opening sequences of waterfalls and mountain vistas. These shots utilize the environment to create a sense of scale and clarity, meeting the criteria for high-quality camera work and shot composition. The outdoor footage, such as the church on the hill (0:14) and the lakeside scene (0:23), shows an excellent grasp of framing and depth. Additionally, the football sequence (0:29–0:33) captures dynamic movement while maintaining sharp focus and clear subject isolation. IMPROVEMENTS The most significant area for improvement is consistent control over lighting and exposure in interior settings. Some indoor clips, such as the classroom sequence (0:34), appear slightly washed out compared to the vibrant outdoor footage, while the purple-tinted close-ups (0:37–0:41) could benefit from more refined color balancing to maintain a professional look. OVERALL Overall, this is a visually impressive reel that highlights a talent for capturing the beauty of the natural world and the energy of live action. The technical skill shown in the landscape and sports photography is excellent, demonstrating a clear ability to direct the viewer's perspective through thoughtful composition. By focusing on lighting consistency across different environments and refining transitions between stylistic choices, the shooter can achieve a more cohesive and polished professional presentation.

Positives: Grouping the shots by mood creates a cohesive, professional feel and showcases a very clear artistic style. Lighting is used well.

Improvements: The colors feel a bit muted here. Increasing the vibrance could enhance the mood of a couple of the scenes. A few shots feel a little soft on the focus. Revisiting the manual focus pull might sharpen the subject.

Positives: Very nice range of work. Good use of available light in the woods. The lighting cue at 0:35 is perfectly timed and is a great recreation of a classic effect! Excellent work with the landscape shots from 0:00 to 0:30; strong framing choices with good use of negative space.

Improvements: Some of your shots are a bit over-exposed causing you to lose information in the highlights and making the shot appear overall flat. Be sure to double check your exposure settings. Also be mindful of giving your actors more lead room in the frame, things were a bit close to center here.

Judge 3

Positives: Your shot composition is very strong, head room is managed, you give reason to why something is not framed traditionally and eyelines follow well. Love the sequence and lighting gag @0:36! Like the amount of depth in this shot (0:28), crowding the frame or having foreground elements makes the world feel deeper! Keep on the track of having the camera locked off or at least on a tripod, allows you to focus on the above mentioned things like framing and lighting more precisely. Handheld and gimbal/dolly work has it's place but is a huge time sink.

Improvements: The music is great for building energy throughout the reel, it starts with a good amount of energy and keeps going. This is a solid reel and this is a very nit-picky point. I would test a few edits of your reel to see what works best. Points to experiment with in the edit: Grouping a few shots from your projects together. So much of cinematography is capturing places and people. I felt we jumped from one project and shot type to the next, many of them shuffled around. Maybe having a short vignette of a project put together will give more structure to what we are seeing. Ex: the shots of the two people in the woods. These are are comments more about the presentation of your work more than the quality of image shown. Ex: We go from a well lit (eyelight and shooting into shadow) and acted shot, to a phone screen. Two very different energies. These shots might make more sense clumped together.

Positives: Thank you for sparing me the handheld and shaky cam! 0:35 Lighting transition. Bravo! Well executed! 0:40 I like the backlighting on her hair. 1:14 Nice close-up insert shots. 1:18 Nice low key lighting. That's a brave exposure level. 1:24 nice composition.

Improvements: You wait until 0:28 to show faces. I would move your stronger shots to the beginning of your reel. For your wide shots, try to choose shots with some sort of dynamic movement or dramatic lighting contrast, otherwise it looks like a still photo. Good luck!
