A short segment from the annual Neuqua Valley High School Variety Show. This is not the full performance, but a portion of the act, where Collin Singer is performing the song “Don't Think Twice, It's All Right” by Bob Dylan. Produced by a student crew of eleven, with seven different cameras.
Positives: Great camera angles! The use of the reverse shot of the performer, and having the low angle with the light streaks was creative. I also like the super-imposed shot of the low-angle and musician close up cam on a dissolve. Audio was great and well mixed of the performer and you could gear crowd applause.
Improvements: Some of the cameras color and brightness did not match. I like the intention of the pan/tilt down from the low stage angle cam although it was a little bumpy, I liked the intention and would have like to see a little more camera movements.
Positives: Excellent capture of the performer and the mood of the song. Director made simple production classy and pleasing to watch. Good audiio. Great composition on many shots.
Improvements: Missed closeup on singer solo (Remember, he’s the main subject). May have consider doing some truck shots. Just because you have the shots available, doesn’t mean you have to use all of them within a period of time. The music bridges is when you can use all of the glamor shots. Otherwise your main subject is the singer.
Positives: Let's look past the harmonica that was off key for parts of the song... Really great job on this. One of the strongest entries in this category. The balance and variety of shots on the stage. Closeups, slow fades, wide shots from the stage behind really excellent. The audio to include the crowd cheering was another really good touch.
Improvements: One key note - follow the action of the song with the performance of the song. The CU of the guitar in between verses when he wasn't singing was perfect - but then we hung there too long and missed the chance to see him begin singing again, catching him mid-lyric. Anticipate the action and be ready to reveal that to the audience. When the director can FEEL the song and anticipate the music and reaction of the crowd, that's a homerun.
