Episode of Homewood-Flossmoor's daily VTV show
Positives: 1. The advert for the school's upcoming Frankenstein play was a cool things to add and unique to your newscast. In a way, it was newsworthy too as it informed students of something that was happening on campus. 2. I also enjoyed your piece on stoichiometry. It was an interesting feature with some cool graphics included that worked at an appropriate pace. Good job!
Improvements: 1. I liked the idea behind the first story, getting off campus and highlighting something happening in the community. However, the lighting on that story was a bit too bright to show on screen. It also lacked mention of any HF students. Were any students participating or watching? Always try to include the perspective of your viewers (in this case -- students) in the stories you produce to make your newscast more relevant to their lives. 2. I was a little torn on your decision to include the Halloween music underneath the Halloween piece. There were a few times there I felt like it would've been better for you to give us natural sound of what was happening in the festival, including sound of the musician you interviewed actually performing his own art. Pre-produced music can be helpful to include at times, but I'm not sure it was so helpful here.
Positives: It's ambitious to produce a daily newscast. Kudos to the team! The studio standup at the top of the newscast was creative, showcased the anchors and added energy and engagement. Well done! Good graphic use throughout the newscast, especially in the sports segment.
Improvements: Look for opportunities to include more student voices in the content, especially at the top of the newscast and in sports. It was about 3:30 into the newscast before we heard from a student. Including more voices will help the audience engage with the content. A cosmetic suggestion: The anchor desk overpowered the anchors. They may want to sit on chairs that are a little higher and that can be adjusted as the anchors change.
Positives: Really great graphics production - some of the best in the entire category. I really appreciate the feeling that this is a wrap up of the news in community and the school. Good quick hits on things going on. Good variety of shot selection in stories - wide, medium and closeups. I could taste the smores. You're also one of very few entries producing teases into future shows. This is just excellent production and planning. Nice job.
Improvements: Love the energy of the show open, but I'd offer a note on the editing - it's nearly impossible for the eye to focus on the words you're flashing in the edits. Quick edits are great - it's really impressive, but the cadence of those edits is important to allow the eye to process what you're flashing in and out. Keep working on the editing of the show and stories. A few missed jump cuts, and nat sound opportunities - especially with the music at the art show. Also, the Frankenstein concept was the right idea but needed someone from the cast to set up the video - "my name is, _____ and I'm playing the role of Frankenstein this year - let me show you what you're in for this Halloween...if you dare!!" or something like that before pushing into the jarring music. Or - rework the segment to be more than video highlights with music that isn't from the show. My gut tells me we couldn't decide if it should be a story about the show or a promotion for the show and because of that, neither landed.
