A short segment from the annual Neuqua Valley High School Variety Show. This is not the full performance, but a portion of the act. The guitarist, Jack Horwitz, is performing the electric guitar part to the song “Paradise City” by Guns N’ Roses. Executed by a student crew of eleven, most of whom were experiencing live production for the first time. The show featured a seven-camera setup, including two wireless handheld cameras, live graphics, and additional live production elements.
Positives: Great camera angles using the handheld, getting canted angles and close ups of the hands playing the guitar and face of the singer and just having fun capturing the performance. The moment the performer jumps off the stage, you were ready to capture the moment during the unexpected.
Improvements: Since the performer is moving around a lot, it makes it difficult to keep the cameras in focus with the low-lighting and iris open, and trying to keep the framing and headroom correct. Good work trying your best!
Positives: The fast cutting matched the pace of the performance. Production did a good job at tracking a live performer. Good camera work. Audio was good, and mixed well with the existing track.
Improvements: Needed close look at the strumming sooner to make sure the viewer knew he was actually playing. If possible, should have included audience shots to show excitement.
Positives: You all did your best with camera movements, really great closeups and audio tracks. Great job getting through it.
Improvements: This was a tough act - and please don't misinterpret this as a bad production. Really difficult to follow the beat of the music with the action of the performer. The two were never really in sync with one another making the job of a director and camera ops that much more challenging. The area of improvement here is really around rehearsals and practice to make sure the production matches the performance.
