Nike - Just Do It - ID# 25
Lyons Township
Commercial
Entry Description
I made this commercial using footage that I shot of my cousin practicing at the park and footage that I shot at our basketball games. The concept is that Nike can inspire dreams and make them into reality.

Story (Needs Growth)
This commercial appears to promote the Nike brand broadly rather than a specific product. While brand commercials can be effective, the short runtime makes it more impactful to focus on one clear product and a defined audience. Narrowing your message—such as highlighting a specific shoe and its purpose (performance, lifestyle, comfort)—would strengthen clarity and persuasion.
Additionally, the opening introduces a character, but the connection between that individual and the basketball game footage is unclear. If the person at the beginning is meant to be the athlete in the game, that relationship needs to be visually or narratively established. Strengthening this connection would help create a more cohesive and engaging story.
Camera (Good)
The opening shots are thoughtfully composed and demonstrate a solid understanding of framing. The inclusion of real basketball game footage adds authenticity and raises the production value. Moving forward, consider how each shot contributes to storytelling clarity—especially when introducing a subject or character.
Sound (Average)
The voiceover is clear and understandable, which is a strength. However, it does not fully align with the energy of the visuals. Nike-style commercials often rely on high-energy, emotionally driven audio to match dynamic visuals. Consider adjusting pacing, tone, and delivery to better match the intensity and rhythm of the edit. Layering in additional sound design or a more impactful music track could further elevate the piece.
Lighting (Good)
Lighting appears consistent and effective across most shots. There are no major exposure issues, and the visuals remain clear and readable. Continue to be intentional with lighting choices, especially when showcasing products to make them stand out.
Editing (Strong Moments, Needs Consistency)
There are several standout editing choices in this commercial. The stop-motion-style shoe effects demonstrate creativity and effort, and the match cuts at the end—showing the shoe at different points in a step while switching models—are particularly strong. This sequence is the highlight of the piece and reflects a high level of technical and creative skill.
That said, the overall edit would benefit from more consistency in pacing and purpose. Some sections feel less intentional, particularly in how the narrative is built. Strengthening transitions between ideas and ensuring each editing decision supports the central message will make the commercial feel more cohesive.
Graphics/Text (Needs Improvement)
The graphics and on-screen text feel underdeveloped compared to the strength of your video work. In professional commercials, typography and motion graphics play a critical role in branding and messaging. Consider refining font choices, placement, animation, and overall design to better match the polish of your footage and editing.

Overall Feedback
This commercial shows clear creativity and flashes of high-level execution, particularly in your editing techniques. The match cut sequence at the end is exceptional and demonstrates strong potential. To elevate this piece further, focus on clarity of message—specifically by narrowing your product focus and strengthening your narrative. Additionally, aligning your audio, graphics, and storytelling with the energy and identity of the brand will create a more cohesive and professional final product.
- 3/9 1:08 pm - Really enjoyed this commercial. I loved that you added a face to the product and intercut it with shots. I really enjoyed seeing the sequence of the shots of the shoes walking as well! Felt really engaged by this and felt like it had a good balance between engaging edits and also solid storytelling. Nice work!

Positives: - Loved the shoe photography, and the match cutting of the shoes towards the end was super cool!
- Good song choice
Improvements: - Too many different scenes that didn’t quite fit together visually.
- Not the best typeface.

Positives: Overall a really great cut and hitting :30 is excellent. The story flows nicely, editing is strong, and product is not only showcased, but also connects to the idea setup in the open.
Cutting between practice and actual game footage is fantastic. The flow of the cut works great and the non-linear storytelling does as well. Nice cuts walking using the different styles. Strong camera work and lighting.
Improvements: Just Do It has been a Nike campaign for a long time - this is a small thing, but approaching the product with an original take would have elevated this even more.
The choice to use VO is ok, but why have the titles to match? Pick one or the other. So much video is watched without sound now, so keeping the titles and losing the VO would be the way to go. These are small things - nicely done.

Positives: Nice!
Cool, engaging insight to open the spot - the story is told well.
The Music and AVO carries the spot nicely.
Improvements: I would've like to have seen a more cinematic approach to the camera work with our hero character, matching the stylistic elements of the product shots.
I think the lighting could've been improved.

Positives: The editing in this piece is excellent. I love the fast-paced style, and the match cuts are really impressive! The story is conveyed very effectively throughout.
Improvements: The intro feels a bit slow, and adding more action at the start could hook the audience immediately. The voiceover might not be necessary since the text conveys the same message. Overall, fantastic work—you have a strong eye for visual storytelling!
