This is a cinematography reel that I shot while on a trip to the Phillippines. I tried to take advantage of the experiences and sights that we saw.

  • 4/23 6:32 pm - Interesting mix of shots and perspective, loved the focused attention on some shots, but really wanted to see more consistency throughout the reel. Good editing to the beats and tempo of the song, but would have loved to see more dynamic uses of light and compositional elements for it to compete in this category.
  • 4/23 9:42 am - Keepers: Cool opening shot to "dive" into the world through your lens. The Philippines title that comes up would have been a good place for your name, given this is a cinematography reel. Very evocative composition (0:14), especially for an early shot in your reel. There are several uses of good texture created by good contrast, especially at 0:34 and 1:02. Nice composition and vibrancy at 0:41; the framing of the ocean through the window adds so much more to the image than the previous shot of just the water. Improvements: Overall, the reel lacks diversity in showcasing a wide range of cinematography skill. Most of the shots appear to be point and shoot and uncontrollable lighting environments. While some compositions are strong, others were under developed and lacked a clear focus. The shot at 0:14 has a great subject in an evocative pose, but there are 3 people semi cut off at the bottom of the frame that distract from your subject. Some issues with focus; shot at 0:29 has a soft subject and 1:01 has a very shallow DoF and the dragonfly goes soft in a large portion of the foreground. Some of the rain shots lack contrast and appear murky because of the low exposure. Most of the water shots are bright and vibrant but feel repetitive, with an unclear destination. The still shots at the end are a nice closure to a travel video but seems an odd choice to conclude your cinematography reel.
  • 4/17 10:40 am - POSITIVES: Some variety in camera shots and compositon, with creativity on your opening shot! Nice shallow depth of field @ :33 & :35. Some natural lighting variety (sunny/cloudy) that conveys mood. Beautiful setting that contributes to your "story". AREAS FOR IMPROVEMENT: Follow the rule of thirds on more of your shots-- numerous focal points were at the edge of your frame. For shots where there is no movement of the subject in the frame, consider adding camera movement to add interest, even if it's subtle. Focus issues at :28; :40 appears to be a still image, as well as the final 3 shots. These shouldn't have been included.
