I didn’t feel like your B-roll helped tell the story, not that it was distracting, but essentially it was many stills of posters etc.- it lacked diversity and the presence of people. I was a little confused at first thought it was about the sneaker drive, but it was very heavy on the Girl Up organization so in the end I wasn’t sure what the main objective of the story was. You have a couple of jump cuts that could easily be hidden with b-roll, the talking was edited nicely, but hide those jump cuts with well placed b-roll and your audience will never know the difference. Next time try and bring in some more members, it will give your story a more diverse feel rather than just hearing from one speaker for 2 minutes. Finally this is a natural sound package, there really was not a presence of natural sounds (granted your topic doesn’t lend itself to this, but I would have tried to help pull in the natural audio which in turn will pull in your audience as well.
  • 3/25 7:08 am - Great story topic. There was a jump cut at :15. When shooting b-roll, always use either a tripod or some type of stabilizer. Your b-roll was very shaky and is distracting. Avoid what is called “ping ponging” - that where you see the person being interviewed, then one shot of b-roll, back to that person, then one shot of b-roll, back to that person, etc. You want to string together multiple shots of b-roll. Another jump cut at :59 - cover these up with b-roll. One of the key parts of this category is to use the natural audio to help tell the story. This entry doesn’t really fit this category because of the small amount of b-roll that there is to begin with and also because there is no natural audio that helps to tell the story or to move it forward.
  • 3/4 11:19 am - This was a really cool organization to hear about! Your interviewee was eloquent and spoke clearly about what the club was about and its impact. You also did a nice job cutting this interview to tell the story. It was very easy to follow. Since this was an audio news package category, I wish I could have heard more natural sounds that are involved in this organization (students working together, organizing sneakers, etc.). Some of the b-roll you took was also a bit shaky. I would suggest filming both your b-roll and your interview on a tripod. This will give you even more of a professional look. I think if you could capture some additional b-roll and audio, this could be an even stronger story!
