A live recording of Ryan Kim singing and playing piano for the Lewis Capaldi song, "Leaving My Love Behind" for the 2024 Variety Show.
Positives: -I like the variety of shots you used to keep it interesting, including the keyboard -the translucent transitions looked great and worked well for this
Improvements: -On the opening shot it would have been good to see his whole face. The top of his head was a bit awkward as a beginning shot.
Positives: The camera shots were very well done. The director's sequencing and timing was very professional.
Improvements: The lighting, although you went for mood, was too dark in several places to really see him playing. Audio seemed a bit too much level on music and not enough on singing.
Positives: - This was so well done! With a single performer it can be very easy to think 'well we can just stay on this one shot for a while since it's just one person' - I'm so glad you didn't do that. The variety of shots was wonderful, the pace with which the director called them was spot on, and the use of the slow dissolve between shots was extremely effective for this performance. - Two specific moments that shone brightest - GREAT job by the camera op/director to see and capture the phone lights that the audience was holding up! It brought some emotion into the performance from the crowd. And then I loved that you ended up on a shot of the performer's face as he finished, smiled, and then the lights went down. PERFECT ending.
Improvements: - Minor things to think about, but watch the order in which you take your shots. In the middle we went a long time without seeing the performer head on, and going from one shot of his hands to a different shot of his hands might not have been the most effective move. - Not sure how much leeway you had here, but the overhead shot could have been adjusted a bit to be more effective. Because of framing and placement we couldn't quite see his hands touch the piano keys and we also couldn't quite see his face, which left this shot feeling a little empty to me.
