  • 4/29 1:31 pm - The focus on Devil's Lake as a device is both exciting but also limiting. A lot of the shots that are narrative focused are not as well conceived of in terms of their overall cinematography, especially when they are shaky or point of view shots. You would have been better served using a composite of five six or seven projects of different genres and styles and completing putting the best shots into this reel instead. That said, keep working and filming as you are in your way!
  • 4/28 3:16 pm - I really liked the concept of following a day-long journey; it gave your editing a natural flow and great visual fluency. Your work with the cars was technically strong, but to reach the highest marks for camera work and creativity, the judges need to see that your skills translate to different types of subjects. The top-scoring reels usually demonstrate that the cinematographer can find the right angle for a person, a landscape, and an action sequence all in the same reel. If you can take that same day-long lighting progression and apply it to a more diverse set of subjects, you will see your scores in the Camera and Lighting categories move into that elite range.
  • 4/6 2:23 pm - PROS The reel demonstrates a clear mastery of automotive cinematography, particularly in capturing the aesthetic of the vehicle within its environment. The close-up shot of the car's emblem (0:01) and the wide shot of it driving down a leaf-strewn road (0:02) are both visually striking and well-composed. The reflection shot in the side mirror at 0:04 is especially creative, using the sky and clouds to add a sense of freedom and movement. These shots show a strong ability to use the subject’s form and the surrounding landscape to create an engaging visual story. IMPROVEMENTS The primary area for growth is in the diversity of the content and more rigorous exposure control. The reel is heavily focused on a single subject in a consistent outdoor setting, which limits the ability to showcase versatility across different genres or lighting conditions. In terms of exposure, the transition to the bright sky in the mirror shot (0:04) and the following highway sequence (0:06) shows a slight loss of detail in the highlights, suggesting a need for more precise control in high-contrast environments. Incorporating interior shots or nighttime sequences would provide a more comprehensive look at your technical range. OVERALL This is a solid, focused reel that successfully captures a specific mood and subject with a high degree of visual appeal. The compositions are thoughtful, and the editing creates a smooth, cohesive experience. To move to the next level, the filmmaker should aim to include a wider variety of subjects and demonstrate an ability to master more complex and diverse lighting challenges. Increasing the breadth of the work while maintaining this level of compositional quality will be key to creating a competitive professional portfolio.
