  • 4/29 12:39 pm - This showcases a solid diversity of different film clips and camera angles and Lighting situations. However, by including treated footage and material that has been edited with effects, it's distracting in this category that should focus on cinematography itself. Good work overall!
  • 4/28 1:07 pm - Really good, but also really short. Why not showcase longer portions of your work to continue to demonstrate your abilities? Clearly a lot of work went into compositing the edit, was that to cover a lack of depth?
  • 4/6 9:43 am - PROS This reel demonstrates a high level of technical ambition and creative flair, particularly in the areas of camera movement and visual storytelling. The tracking shots used during the "Julian's Story" segment (0:21–0:24) showcase a strong fluency with camera movement and stability, effectively following the subject through a complex environment. The creative framing of the introductory television sequence (0:00–0:03) successfully directs the viewer's perspective and establishes a unique mood for creative innovation. IMPROVEMENTS The primary area for growth lies in the Lighting and Exposure category where several sequences suffer from underexposure. Most notably at the 0:06, 0:08, and 0:28 marks, the lack of adequate light makes it difficult to discern the subject or environmental details. While low-light shots can be used to convey mood, the loss of visual information in these specific clips impacts the visual fluency of the reel. To improve, the student should focus on maintaining control of lighting elements in dark settings to ensure that every shot remains legible and continues to enhance the story rather than obscuring it. OVERALL Overall, this reel showcases a filmmaker with a strong grasp of movement and compositional storytelling who is not afraid to take creative risks. The technical proficiency in tracking and framing suggests a high potential for professional-grade work. By refining the approach to exposure and ensuring that lighting consistently supports the visibility of the subject, the creator will be able to balance their stylistic ambition with the technical clarity necessary for cinematography.
