Runaway - The Traveling Wilburys | Shot on iPhone 15 Pro - ID# 308

Vernon Hills
Music Video

Entry Description

I wanted to test out the new ability of the iPhone 15 Pro to shoot in a LOG color space. Out at a day in the park, I figured I could try it out and there happened to be live music, which I filmed. In editing it just came together in sync with the music.

  • 4/17 9:15 am - STORY: Your music video showcases the joy and energy of a live outdoor music event in a park setting. The energy of the crowd, people dancing, and nature all contribute to the vibrant and authentic atmosphere. There’s clearly an intention to celebrate community, music and togetherness. I think including the crowd shots and dancers gives life to the story and helps the viewer feel the energy of the moment. Something to note is that the train shot at 1:21 and the house at 2:12 feel somewhat disconnected from the rest of the footage. If they hold meaning (ex: historical, symbolic or contextual to the park), consider giving the context visually (like showing a sign), or take them out to keep focus on the performance, the crowd, and nature within the park. SOUND: Your audio is mixed appropriately. As a bonus, it would be nice to hear audio from some of the clips you include in your video. For example, we see a clip of the audience clapping at 0:31. It would be nice if we were able to hear that. And this could be layered very subtly under the music track. CAMERA: You use a great mix of wide and medium shots that give the viewer a strong sense of space and energy. I especially want to highlight your framing, which really stands out. Your shot at 1:35 is a great example. It adds visual interest as well as depth! Great job! Something to note is that there is a lack of close-up shots, especially of the performers. Adding those would really help create a stronger emotional connection not just with the viewer, but even spatially with the crowd in your video. For example, 0:39-0:45 would be a great time to include close-ups of performers and their facial expressions, or them playing instruments. LIGHTING: The sunny and bright tones of your video help support the positive and happy mood of your music video. There is some overexposure visible throughout some clips in your video. For example, the sky at 0:23 and the leaves on the plants at 1:10 are just the tiniest blown-out. This is probably due to filming in full sun. I know that you filmed on an iPhone so you could consider adjusting your exposure slightly or, if possible, attach ND filters to the camera lens on your phone. You could also use a simple reflector or bounce card to control shadows and light on faces in harsh sunlight. EDITING: You clearly put thought into editing to the beat of the music. You include those faster cuts during more energetic parts of the song and that really helps to keep the viewer engaged. Overall, your framing choices, editing and energy are all strong and with just a few tweaks in exposure and shot selection your work will be even more impactful. You clearly have a great eye and a strong sense of what makes a moment worth sharing. Great work!
  • 2/18 10:30 am - The concept of filming the music video in a park for a live concert is an excellent choice. The outdoor setting provides a fresh and vibrant backdrop that adds an energetic vibe to the video. The natural environment complements the music and creates an authentic, relaxed atmosphere that feels both inviting and engaging. It’s clear that a lot of thought went into selecting this location, as it works well with the overall theme and energy of the song. The wide-open space adds to the sense of freedom and celebration, making it feel like a genuine community event. The video does a great job of capturing the audience’s interaction with the music. You can feel the connection between the performers and the crowd, especially through the reactions and enthusiasm of the attendees. This energy is conveyed well, and it really brings the scene to life, showing the impact that live performances have on people. The camera movement is fluid and well-executed, keeping the action dynamic and engaging. The pacing is also well-timed, syncing perfectly with the tempo of the music. The shots flow smoothly from one to the next, allowing the viewer to stay immersed in the moment. That said, there is a bit of a disconnect between the performers and the audience. While the setting is great and the energy is palpable from the crowd’s side, the performers themselves seem slightly detached. The stage setup, combined with the lack of close-up shots of the singers, gives the impression that the performers are somewhat distant from the audience both physically and emotionally. Close-up shots of the performers would help bridge this gap and bring them closer to the viewer, making it easier to connect with their expressions and presence on stage. Additionally, an over-the-shoulder shot of the audience from the performers' perspective could be an effective way to show how the performers see and interact with the crowd. This shot could help to convey a sense of connection, showing the excitement of the audience from the performers' viewpoint, while also highlighting the impact of their performance. It would offer a new perspective that adds depth to the video, making it feel more immersive. Overall, the music video does a great job of capturing the energy of a live concert in a park setting, with strong pacing, camera movement, and an engaging depiction of the audience’s interaction with the music. The video could be improved by adding more close-up shots of the performers and incorporating shots that highlight the relationship between them and the crowd. These additions would create a stronger emotional connection and make the performance feel more intimate and engaging. Great work capturing the energy of the event, with room to bring the performers and audience closer together visually.
