  • 4/16 1:14 pm - Love it, great story, great methodical story process as it unravels, b roll always seems to reinforce what was said or introduce what is coming up next. You also used the sound really well to transition in and out of interviews. Watch your audio levels between the different subjects interviewed (some are louder than others). You did a great job on this, it is the kind of story I would push my kids to make. One of my favorites, I would be disappointed if you didn’t place in the top 3. You should be proud of your work.
  • 4/1 1:09 pm - Great natural audio right off the top of your story! The weaving of the sound bytes with the natural audio was seamless! It flowed very well. The interviews were framed and lit well and the sound bytes told a full story. Nice job with the b-roll of the class making the outfits to the interviews and measuring of the preschool students to the opening of the gifts. The natural audio was brought up in the right places to help move the story along. Well done!
  • 3/5 11:40 am - The opening shots and sounds we saw prior to the interview helped to establish that this was a story about some sort of sewing class. We got to hear a huge variety about what goes on in this class- sewing machines, scissors, etc. I love how your interviews were framed in a way that allowed us to see the background of the class going on as well (and were also well lit). The focus on the communication skills needed for the industry was a great focus for the story. I love how you took the time to pause your interviews to let us hear the little students speaking about what your interviews talked about. Your NAT audio overall helped to support what was happening in the story.

Positives: Great opening shot with natural sound. Love the nat pops throughout the piece and great variety of visuals.

Improvements: Bring up the interview sound more. It is hard to hear under some of the nat sound. Voice editing is harsh, need to add some smooth transitions.

Positives: Such nice, crisp nats to start the story! Loved the sound of the sewing machines and the scissors cutting the fabric. Nice framing on your interviews. Your audio bed is pretty good, too. I like how you included natural moments in the story, like the little girl talking at :50. Nice job working to get a variety of shots. I see some nice wide, medium and tight shots used throughout the story. This is really great work!

Improvements: Your interview shots were nice, but a story like this begs for an active interview. In other words, interview your subject as she's working at the sewing machine. You can leave the microphone on her and ask her questions while she's sewing. That kind of interview can help put people at ease, and you'll get some great natural moments. You'll also be able to capture crisp audio of whatever she's doing. Next time, think a bit more about sequencing. You had some nice variety of shots, but they weren't necessarily connected to the same subject. Get a wide shot of a person sewing, then a medium shot, then a tight shot of their fingers working the fabric through the machine. Great job!

Positives: The sound of the scissors cutting combined with the tight shot of the scissors was SO satisfying. Really nice choice of shots. They were diverse. Some were human-focused. Others night and tight. REALLY great sounds. I like that you gave space between interviews to listen to the sound. A lot of people only do that at the beginning rather than throughout.

Improvements: These are VERY nitpicky. This was a great package. - The first girl interviewed sounds much louder than the rest of the interviews. - One of the sequences felt a little too literal for me. Ivana Veliz says she asks questions like "they're favorite animal" and then you see her literally asking a kid what her favorite animal is. It's a little awkward and repetitive. I would have cut her interview off before she said she asks them their favorite animal and just used the b-roll.
