  • 4/16 12:54 pm - I love many of your shots are artistic with the angle, focus, etc. I see you took some intentionality at bringing in some creativity - Great Job. Try and get your B-Roll to fit with the interview, for example at 20 seconds you say how cheerful the girls are but all I really see in the shots are their backs ( I know the one girl is raising her hand but a more intentional “cheer” where you see faces would have been better). Love how the interview starts as the b-roll is ending (34 seconds) , it is a great way to tie the pieces together without your story coming across as choppy. I love when my students overlap like that. Not all students get it, but you do. I would have liked a little more of natural sound as the story went on. Use the audio as transitions (pins crashing down etc). I felt like the majority of your cool sounds were in the beginning of your piece and then kind of went away, pepper them throughout.
  • 4/1 1:10 pm - The sounds bytes for this story were good. And you had good b-roll. But use the natural audio from that b-roll to help tell the story. Don’t keep that audio level of the b-roll at the same level throughout the story. In between sound bytes, let’s hear the audio of the ball hitting the pins at a full level. Let’s hear the audio from the ball coming back out at full level. Put a wireless mic on one of the team members and let’s hear her while she’s bowling or encouraging a teammate. Put a wireless mic on one of the coaches and let us hear them coach the players. In this category the sound bytes AND the natural audio should both be telling the story. There’s so many opportunities for great natural audio here in this story - I just felt it was underused.
  • 3/5 11:31 am - I loved the opening sounds that we heard in the beginning of your news package. Even though the first interview didn't directly state that the coach was coaching bowling, your audio and shots implied this for us! Your b-roll also aligned beautifully with your a-roll. For example, when the coaches and teammates talk about cheering each other on, you show that. I would suggest when filming your interviews to focus on eliminating some of the headspace for your subjects. I also loved your closing audio of the team cheer. Since this was a theme that was heavily discussed in this story, I wanted to hear more audio of the support and cheering of the teammates overall.

Positives: Great variety of shots. Having the sound throughout the whole piece of the bowling alley brings the piece to life.

Improvements: Bring up the audio in the whole piece. It sounds low. Add more sequence shots. For example, wide shot of the bowler, medium of their face then tight shot of it being released.

Positives: Nice sequencing off the top of the story! Great opening soundbite from the coach. I can really sense his enthusiasm and love for the team. I like that you talked to a variety of people for this story. Nice little nat breaks between some of the sound bites. You got some memorable sots in this story. Fun closing shot! Great job!

Improvements: Your interview shots were a bit too dark. I know shooting in a bowling alley isn't easy, and I'm not sure if you had your own light. If not, try to position your interview subject underneath a light inside to illuminate their face as best you can. Next time, work on getting more variety in your shooting. I saw a lot of wide and medium shots. I would've loved to see more tight shots. That will give you more options in the edit and help with sequencing.

Positives: LOVED that shot of the ball rolling away from the camera down the aisle. It was such a great sequence. The sound overall sounded great. Loved how it began and ended. The nat sound was great throughout and kept quiet enough that it didn't interfere with the interviews.

Improvements: Less headroom on your interviews. The lighting is a bit uneven. Some faces are too dark and some clips were too bright.
