  • 3/4 7:29 pm - The editing of this show is well done- the timing of the anchor coming back on after soundbites is well timed. The show is fast paced and I'm sure will be great for attention spans. National news tops your top stories- this is great, but how relatable is it to your student audience? Perhaps get the national news in, but relate it to your school and still get your students and staff opinions. The only school news we hear is in sports when we get to see some good footage and interviews from your own students. Some of the b-roll is though to watch, as you're showing two videos at the same time, one on top and one on bottom. Gymnastics sometimes has four videos. It's a lot to look at. Perhaps a music change, as we hear the same beat throughout the entire show. Love the packaging. Hope your school is getting coverage of its news and features too! Nice job.
  • 3/4 4:14 pm - This show was very engaging and fast-paced. I absolutely love what you were doing and trying to create here. The on-screen graphics are so helpful and the stories are well written and short. This is a great way to engage an audience with a shorter attention span. The use of soundbites and verbatim is helpful and stresses the words. The two different shots of the anchor are creative, but I don't know that it adds to the show. I also wonder if a different background might be better. The faux brick wall is plain. The use of maps and the full screen is well done. I love how you tackle national stories and aren't locked into school news.

Positives: School bill - greAt use of graphics. Story was very clear. Migrants story - good intro to sound bites. too many intros just parrot when the speaker is about to say - these didn't Intro to wrestling was very clever. Overall - great story selection and very well written.

Improvements: Hard to find anything major. Still, The anchors look a little dark and I wasn't in love with the side shot of them. But those are creative choices.

Positives: I like the take on quick digestible news with the vertical video standpoint. This would be great on different social platforms. Saving the forecast until the end is typical of a true news market. Viewers are always searching for a forecast and keeping it at the end makes the viewer stick around. Aka higher ratings!

Improvements: Curious to know more about the source for your weather forecast. Without a degree to back up the forecast, I'd consider including a source something on that screen where you bump out the three day. I like the subtle music under the newscast...but perhaps change the tune to something as news pivots from something serious to something lighthearted. Don't be afraid to play with straight natural audio...in fact, try using it to your advantage.

Positives: Good job localizing the national and state stories, such as the students’ reactions to the cell phone legislation. This makes the story more impactful to your viewers. The newscast was visually interesting throughout. Showing two b-roll videos at once is an innovative use of the mobile phone’s aspect ratio. Also, your graphics package was dynamic, consistent and professional.

Improvements: Your newscast needed more storytelling. Viewers would appreciate at least one news package in which a field reporter tells a story. For example, in the story on robots for autism, the reporter could have introduced us to a teacher, who could explain the learning challenges for autistic students and how the robots help them overcome those challenges. These packages are more engaging than anchor-delivered stories and would provide a nice break to a fast-paced newscast. Also, while the video effects were creative, the narrative was not. Be sure to use external mics and watch their placement. It was hard to hear the students in the cell phone legislation story.
