Employing creative visual storytelling, this public service announcement shows why it's important to get sleep rather than procrastinating!
Positives: The creative use of colorful lighting helped convey the overwhelming feeling/mood. Music choice helped support the narrative along with the use of sound effects.
Improvements: Some of the shots were very dark and needed to be lightened up. Creative editing techniques used throughout however, the overall piece could have moved quicker through edit choices.
Positives: The lighting in this PSA is just fantastic. The flashing screens is a great way to visualize that staying up late doesn’t provide anything of value. Editing is well done that moves at a fast pace, without moving too fast that the viewer can’t follow the story. The editing does an effective job of melding the camera work and sound design to advance the story.
Improvements: Having the character hit their head is a humorous way to drive home the message. Is there a way to better emphasize how our brains can’t think clearly when we’re tired? I think something that could make this PSA that stronger is to show some of the negative effects of not getting enough sleep. One possibility would be when the character goes to make popcorn, instead of hitting the buttons on the microwave, they keep hitting numbers on the calculator on their phone, thinking it is the number pad on the microwave. (You could still do the hitting their head on the counter bit.) I think the “Go to bed” text needed to come in a beat earlier. Currently it’s hard to read the text before it starts to disappear.
Positives: Solid visual stroytelling. Reminded me of Rian Johnson's "Evil Demon Golfball from Hell" short film, or more so the visual stroytelling of Sam Raimi in "Evil Dead" and other works. It's quite obvious you have a strong understanding of all the pillars of compelling filmmaking: the cuts, framing, lighting gags. I'm looking forward to seeing more of your work.
Improvements: My suggestion, if your thinking of making a career out of this, is to keep developing a diverse reel. Build a network of other people in the craft, camera houses and vendors, people who know how to do the producing and managerial work. You don't have to do film school to achieve this. In regards to the video, it's solid.
