Commercial produced by Ryan Anderson (2024)
Positives: OK, dang - this looks GOOD. Seriously, much of the shooting, lighting, editing and VFX are on par with real-world work - amazing job! Good music choice, too. The writing does a great job of connecting the idea of "simply" to the brand. This is a great example of storytelling without the need for dialogue, or any other visual narrative.
Improvements: Looks like you're pretty knowledgeable in the product shooting realm - so now let me challenge you: I want to see a person! I want to see what is called a bite n smile, or in this case, a sip and smile. A big part of shooting food and bev is showing how the consumer interacts with it. I want to see eyes pop, a smile, a can grab. This one's a little nit-picky - I want to see a more exciting logo shot at the end - Compared against all the beautiful stuff that comes before it, it falls flat, and I know you can push it!
Positives: 1. The camera shots were outstanding. Seems like it is tv ready! 2. The editing is great, love the camera wipes with the Fanta can. That is perfect because it's interesting AND it gives our brain that much more time to think about Fanta.
Improvements: I had to watch this 15 times to find something to improve on. Usually I see mistakes in the first or second viewing, so know that I had to look VERY hard to find two elements that could be improved... 1. The oranges at 0:10 are a little dark and shadowy. Food / beverages in commercials are blasted with light and color. Dark / shadows on fruit is slightly less appetizing. Next time you are at the grocery store, look how crazy bright and lit the oranges (all fruit) are. There are no shadows on the fruit at a nice grocery store. Humans associate bright fruit with healthy / fresh / tasty. 1.1. I won't call this an objective mistake. But I want to at least challenge you to experiment with this (it kinda goes with my above point)... When you pour the drink at 0:07, it doesn't like incredibly thirst quenching. It looks good, but I think it could look 10% better if you experimented. For example, could it be MORE fizzy? What if you shook up the can a little before pouring to make more bubbles. Or maybe if you mixed the fanta with some tonic water you could get more bubbles. Also, I think a brighter orange would be more appetizing than the darker orange. Maybe mix it with water or adjust the lighting to get a very bright, vivid orange... Like I said, not a mistake by you, just something fun to experiment with next time you film a food / beverage product. I recently acted in a Carl's Jr commercial... they cooked 80 burgers for the actors and there were all kinds of toothpicks and tape and tricks to make the burger look as absolutely appetizing as possible (in slow mo, with an extreme close up). It's hard work but that's what it takes to get paid the big bucks when filming food / beverage commercials. You clearly have that attention to detail and you could master those skills in short time. 2. I'm going to subtract a small point for sound. The sounds you presented were excellent. The song went very well with the product. HOWEVER, If I was in the other room, I would have no idea what commercial I just missed, just by hearing the music. People usually walk away from commercials and it's your job to grab their attention. I think this commercial would have been even more effective if you had a voice over reading the words that you had written. Then maybe a few sip noises and people saying "ahhhh." Same exact concept but just make sure that if someone has their eyes closed, they still can't escape the sounds of how good this drink is. SUMMARY: You did a really great job with this. Like I said, it took me 15 times to look for elements to improve on. You worked really hard on these zoom-ed in shots, and you edited it together with professional level skill. If you want a career in commercials, editing, camera work, any of that stuff, you clearly have the talent for it.
Positives: It's a simple but effective story. There are fun dynamic shots and great lighting. Overall the idea comes together well.
Improvements: The font took me out of the commercial several times. If you are going to use a lot of text to tell your story it really needs to be the perfect text. Ruffles did a ridge campaign this year for the all star game and while it didn't always use their traditional branding it introduce some shapes that connected to the brand. I think finding ways to bring the Fanta blue into you shots might have helped convince us on the text.
