Positives: 1. All the stories that were produced an appeared in the newscast had unique angles and were strongly told. Good job! 2. And all the video shots in those stories had great composition, appeared very clear on screen, and were composed well. Those are all part of the ingredients necessary to put together a professional looking newscast!
Improvements: 1. I would have liked to see a little more creativity in how your newscast was structured. It was anchor then narrated story, anchor then narrated story, anchor then narrated story until its end. It could be nice to break it up and maybe have the anchors toss to a student reporter who interviews multiple students one topics with no narration, or a weather segment with another student in the studio. Doing that could make your newscast a little less predictable. 2. While I appreciated your commitment to the rule of thirds when composing your videography, it's usually a rule that applies to when your interview subject, not the actual reporter who is narrating or appears on person in the video. That's because the reporter is supposed to show or convey a type of authority in the story. That usually comes with them being in the center of the camera view, not to the sides. Small critique, but something to remember in the future.
Positives: Nice production throughout the newscast which kept the pace moving and the viewer engaged. Strong use of graphics throughout and it was smart to show your reporters in the field. Good job getting outside of the studio and into the community and school! Terrific job saving information for the tags after each package. Those tags help button up the story and create a sense of cohesiveness throughout the newscast.
Improvements: Think about a short tease (with video and graphics, if possible) at the top of the newcast to highlight what's coming up. Be careful not to make it too long, however, as you don't want to impact the pace of the production. There's room for more student voices in some of the stories. Viewers like to see people they can relate to... so telling the stories through student voices can be even more effective.
Positives: Great use of a virtual set. Nice touches and production throughout. Some nice field camera work and attempts to make topics like Amnesty International visually interesting...which I think I also struggled with 30 years ago in high school. There are some really strong student reporters in this entry. A lot of raw talent here - really impressed.
Improvements: Windy City Bulls feature was really nice - I think we were missing sound from fans and players versus executives and stock video. Can't forget the people enjoying the games! Single interview stories, like the sewing feature, can work if the video and sound is REALLY compelling. If neither of those are present, these types of stories have some challenges in hitting the audience and keeping them engaged. I'd suggest revisiting that story to see if there's either another way to do it or make it shorter so it lands how you want it to. Careful with the jump cuts...there's a right way and wrong way to do those.
