- 4/23 4:13 pm - As a news story I think you did an excellent job. Your interviews unfold in a very logical way and your b-roll is very supportive of what is being spoken about. Your piece was very informative for someone who is not familiar with ceramics. In addition I like the variety of interviews, you get the teachers perspective and the in a sense then the students response. You had great balance between the messages that were coming through. The two minutes went by fast which was good, I think the pace of your story was good a few of your interviews came a little fast, I always tell my students to give your audience a second or two of b roll between to interviews so they can digest what they just heard before a new idea is introduced. One of your fast cuts to a new interview is at 1:08. When trying to fit a package into a specific time, don’t end it abrubtly, your piece felt unfinsihed and I felt like it was lacking closure, even if it is just a final shot of someone packing up for the day. If you don’t have time to include that scene, then take something out of the middle so again you have the space at the end for that natural closure. One last thing, maybe some more completed projects at some point would have been nice in the B-Roll, I felt like I was always looking at a work in progress, and would have loved to see some finished products. I thought you did an excellent job telling a story with the interviews and b-roll. Good Job.
- 3/25 6:54 am - Good sound bytes from both the instructor and the student in the class. How can you use more of the natural audio from the room to help tell more of your story? There were 2 times where we hear the teacher talking with the students - that was great! But what about hearing the students talking with one another. :51-:54 the natural audio was brought up full, but it didn’t do anything to move the story forward or help tell the story in any way. Felt like the story had a sudden ending - as if there was more, but because of the time limit, you cut it off where you did. Very nice job with the b-roll - there was a variety of shots - different angles and different types of shots. It was all lit well.
- 3/4 11:33 am - I love how you opened with a few sounds of this classroom. However, I with one of your interviews would have introduced to us that this was your ceramics class. for the student interview, I would also raise the tripod so that the student is shot at eyeline. I did love how you paused your interviews and let us hear your teacher guiding the student. This doesn't seem like an audio heavy art form- it would have been nice to hear more of the tools to support the story. The bags were a great example of this.

Positives: Great opening sequence shot. I like the nat break sound in the middle of the package. Overall great variety of shots.
Improvements: I would have added natural classroom sound under the whole package to have the sound flow throughout the story. There is a shot of the teacher being interviewed at the end and then a natural sound of him in the classroom. I would put b-roll over the end of the video so it is easier on the eye and ear when it transitions to the nat pop of him.

Positives: Great sound in this piece. "We're hip in the clay world." - I love that sot from the teacher! I also liked the first nat pop with the teacher working with the students.
I liked the tight shot of the glaze jar in the foreground as the student works. Nice close-up shots of hands working with clay.
Improvements: I liked your interviews, but I would've loved to hear sound from the students as they were working. You don't necessarily need to pull someone aside for a formal interview. Just put a mic on them as they're working and ask them some questions. You'll get good sound and far more interesting visuals.
I would've liked to see more variety in shot selection. I saw many similar-looking close-up and medium shots of students working. Next time, try to get some super wide shots of the scene and as well as some super tight shots.

Positives: *Good focus on close ups. I could almost feel the clay!
*Nice job matching the video to audio when explaining some of the tools the students use!
Improvements: *Showing some of the finished projects from earlier in the year could have strenghthened the story (if they were available.)
*One suggestion is to mic the subjects while they were working with the clay and have them explain what they were doing and why.
