  • 4/23 3:29 pm - Love your story, each interview seems to add to the next throughout your piece excellent job with that. Often without a central reporter the pieces seem very fragmented, your interviews all flowed really well. Great Job. Your footage is diverse and supportive of what is being said.and the audio adds to the story. Great job with this story, one of my favorites from this category !
  • 3/25 7:11 am - The story was well told. What was missing was using the natural audio to help tell the story. Put a mic on the coach during a meet and let’s hear what he has to say. Put a mic on a player on the bench and let’s hear what she has to say during a meet. That’s the key part of this category - how you tell the story using sound bytes AND the natural audio. One thing to avoid - what’s known as “ping ponging”. That when we see the person talking followed by one clip of b-roll, then back to the person, then one clip of b-roll, etc. String together clips of b-roll. Once we’ve seen the person speaking, there really is no need to go back to them and keep showing them. Be sure you’re balancing your audio levels - the natural audio should never overpower the sound byte.
  • 3/4 11:28 am - Your news package told a clear story and had beautiful composition. I loved the variety of shots you incorporated. Interviews were well framed and followed the rule of thirds. I liked how the story focused on the girls building confidence through this program. My only suggestion would be to incorporate additional natural audio into this piece. With the theme of this piece being the girls building confidence, I wanted to hear this! Could you capture more audio of the girls individually supporting each other or the coach providing feedback to students in a way that supports this confidence? We heard a lot of cheering and background noise from your matches, but I would have loved to have heard more audio examples!

Positives: Good wide variety of shots. I like how it ends and fades to black with the team in a huddle. The sound bites helped the story flow.

Improvements: Hide the mic wire as best you can. You can ask people to put it behind their shoulder and feed it from the back so you don't see it. I would stick to one opening long shot before going to the voice over instead of having a few shots before the story starts.

Positives: Nice job opening the story with some wrestling action. Really great sound with the girls! I feel like I learned a lot about each of them, their challenges and their motivations. Loved that you got reaction shots of teammates watching the wrestling match.

Improvements: Next time, work on building sequences with a mix of wide, medium and tight shots. Your opening sequence, for example, felt a little jarring because the shots were so similarly framed. Instead of two wide shots back-to-back, cut between a really tight shot and a super wide shot. You got great sound during your interviews, but I would've liked to hear some crisper nats in the story. For example, put your mic on the coach (and hide the lav underneath clothing) to get him interacting with the students.

Positives: *The convention of having the interview subjects introduce themselves worked well. The viewer has a clear understanding of who each player is and how they fit into the narrative. The story flowed clearly and effectively! *Nice shot and natsot at the end to sum up the idea of teamwork! It gave the story a defined ending and brought the narrative to a close on a high note!

Improvements: *This is admittedly minor, but you may want to ask the interview subjects to run the mic cord under their tops, if possible, to dress the cord and give the video a more finished look. Again.. a very minor point! Overall great job!
