  • 4/15 8:38 pm - KEEPERS: School of Rock is a cool place and you definitely captured the essence of that. I have a nephew who also was on the School of Rock tour and now he's persuing music. Cool idea to center a documentary around. You have some good cinema verite broll footage to work with and at times it's compelling. IMPROVEMENTS: From a story standpoint, this is more like a long form commercial for School of Rock than a documentary. A better way to work this would be to focus on the Summerfest band PRIMARILY and then work School of Rock into their story of coming together, learning practicing and ultimately performing. Layer your story accordingly. Some of the band shots would have been better served in other parts of the documentary or used as a more captivating montage-style beginning. I really like the raw Summerfest footage. But the audio isn't great due to a lack of a good microphone. But it's still valuable footage. Consider captioning it so your audience doesn't have to work to understand the speakers. For your interview set ups, try to find a more dynamic setting. The background of the interview should feature something pertaining to School of Rock. Add some lighting to your interviews as well. The interviews themselves are slightly grainy, which indicates them being filmed in an area that was too dark. Finally, try to change your interview setups so that they're slightly different for each subject. You can do this by simply putting each person on the other side of the frame from the previous person. Finally, really think about how you align your broll shots to your interview footage. At times, it feels like certain shots are thrown in rather than deliberately chosen. Keep working, learning and telling stories!
  • 2/25 12:56 pm - STORY: this feels like a promotional video that you produced for School of Rock Naperville, not a documentary. If it is a documentary, what or who is the focus? What makes this School of Rock location any different than any other School of Rock location? You have not told a story that clearly identifies what makes THIS location or THESE people special. PRODUCTION: the audio is really muddy. When you interview people at a place where other people are practicing or playing music in the background, you will have rough audio. There is a LOT of background noise in the Summerfest section as well. The camera work is fairly shaky in a lot of shots and the footage looks like a mixture of cameras were used. The lighting for the interviews needed to be a lot better; If you actually bring in lighting, it can drastically improve your image quality.
