  • 4/23 4:01 pm - Love your introduction, it was perfect to get your audience engaged to what is coming. Very logical interviews, story unfolded in a very natural way, good job. Rather than it being a bunch of random interviews they really fit together well. (for example at 46 the girl is talking about being together, and then in the next interview, the coach takes the idea a step further by talking about a picture being taken should show everyone being in sync). What I loved is the coach wasn’t redundant but instead enhanced further what was said by the girl. Great job building the story and piecing together the interviews. You had a great variety of camera shots, locations, close ups, backgrounds, people, action, wide, etc. I didn’t feel like I was looking at the same footage over and over again. Watch some of your shots if they are crooked, it is easy to fix in post production (59, 134), something like that gets distracting for some people. I thought you covered the story well.
  • 3/25 6:56 am - Good start to your story hearing the counting. Good explanation of what color guard is. Nice job hearing the student helping her peer. Make sure that all of the sound bytes are at the same level - the sound byte that started at 1:16 was a little lower than the others. This story is a very good mix of sound bytes and using the natural audio to help tell the story. Consider putting a wireless mic on either the director or one of the captains so that we can clearly hear them working with the group. Good variety of b-roll in this story, from practice footage in the parking lot and field to performance footage. Overall, well done.
  • 3/4 11:32 am - This was a well done story with a variety of interviews and b-roll that kept me engaged. I loved how you interviewed both coaches and students. We also got to hear a variety of nat sounds- coach clapping, counting, the band. Sounds were easy to hear and helped to support the story. I would have loved to have heard some of the audio from your v-show and other performances that you included. I also really love how your SNN bug and lower thirds text merge in the transition. Bravo on a job well done!

Positives: Great shots throughout the whole package showcasing different events they are a part of throughout the year. The nat pops flow very well and make sense as the story progresses.

Improvements: The color is a little off between shots that were filmed at practice and other events. I would have liked to see a tight shot or two on the hands or even the eyes as the flag is thrown.

Positives: Looks you shot this story during the golden hour! Really nice lighting on the student interviews. Great job blending your audio! I like that your nats fade in and out with your soundbites. That always makes a huge difference in stories. Great closing shot!

Improvements: Next time, leave your mic on your interview subject as they're doing whatever it is they're doing. In this case, put the mic on a student and/or the coach as they're rehearsing. That will allow you to capture really clean nats and any interaction between the coach and the students. I really like that you shot some of this handheld. It works well when you're close to your subjects, but those wide shots have a bit too much camera shake. Next time, shoot those wide shots on a tripod.

Positives: *Nice use of the natsot of the coach giving directions during practice. *Great shot to end the piece... It really gave the story a sense of finality.

Improvements: *I would have liked to have seen more video of the performances, as opposed to just practice, if that video was available. Or perhaps hold the performance shots a little longer. *Asking the participants why they are in color guard could enhance the story.
