- 4/29 12:44 pm - Dynamic location and and camera angles! However, the travelogue aspect limits the breadth of footage, lighting, locations that would make the reel more compelling. The color grading is bit distracting an the codec could also be improved. Good job - you clearly have a keen eye!
- 4/28 3:07 pm - It is an amazing opportunity to capture so many beautiful locations, and you clearly have an eye for a great view. Even when shooting on an iPhone, the hallmark of a top-tier cinematographer is 'intentionality'—taking manual control of the exposure both in-camera and in post-production to ensure the image is perfect. To compete with the best in this category, I’d encourage you to start shooting in RAW format, which gives you full access to the color spectrum and prevents the 'clipping' we see in auto-exposed footage. Next time, focus on being more intentional with your settings before you hit record to ensure every frame is properly exposed and professional.
- 4/6 2:02 pm - PROS
The reel excels at capturing the inherent aesthetic beauty of its locations, utilizing high-quality environments to create a visually pleasing experience. The sequence beginning at 0:09 is a highlight, effectively using a doorway as "internal framing" to create depth and direct the viewer's eye toward the central subject. The exterior exposure throughout the cityscapes (0:28–0:32) is consistently handled, avoiding blown-out highlights in bright daylight. The editing maintains a gentle, observational pace that matches the "travelogue" feel of the footage, providing a clear and coherent visual journey through the various settings.
IMPROVEMENTS
The primary challenge is that the footage often feels like "point and shoot" documentation rather than intentional cinematography. While the exterior light is beautiful, a successful reel must demonstrate "Mastery of lighting techniques". Relying solely on uncontrolled ambient light prevents the creator from showing how they can shape light to create mood or emphasize a subject.
To demonstrate "fluency with camera use", the filmmaker should include more varied shot types. The current reel is heavy on wide and medium-wide scenic shots; adding macro details or shots with motivated camera movement (rather than simple pans) would better showcase a diverse technical range.
OVERALL
Overall, this reel is a collection of beautiful "found" moments that succeed due to the stunning subject matter. The next step in development is to prove they can create a look rather than just find one. The filmmaker has a good eye for choosing locations; the next step is to demonstrate technical control over those locations through deliberate light manipulation and more sophisticated, multi-layered framing.
