GBN is rolling out a new phone policy, requiring students to store their devices in designated phone pockets rather than keeping them in their pockets or backpacks. The change aims to minimize distractions and keep students more engaged in the classroom. But how are students and staff reacting to the new rule?
Positives: - You did a nice job of making a relatively non-visual story interesting visually. I like what you did editing the email to highlight and pull out the text. You have great shot variety on showing phones and how they're used in school. The rack focus shot was really nice. - This feels like a news package done well above your grade level. Nice writing. Good storytelling. Well done!
Improvements: - The one thing you could have needed was natural sound. We saw people using their phones and/or laptops, teachers teaching in classrooms, someone on TikTok. Generally, all of those things have sound. Use just a second or so from each of those to break up your reporter track and soundbites. This makes the viewer feel like they're there. In turn, that draws their attention.
Positives: I like how you showed the before and after of students with phones and without. I like that you interviewed both teachers and students
Improvements: Was the first shot of the school a picture or video? It looked like a still photo, so I'm wondering why you didn't get broll outside the school. I was hoping you were going to explain the phone policy when you showed the letter. You don't have to read it word for word, but a quick summary would be great. Be careful how wide you shoot an interview. I was looking everywhere but at the Dean. I especially noticed the photos behind here which I'm guessing are her children. Does she want them on TV? When you toss to a sot, you can ditch the "saying" or "explains" or "for example." It feels very newspaper. Let the sound tell the story.
Positives: --Great to see a variety of video angles. Each interview subject was framed well during interviews --It was good to see the reporter's narration match the video
Improvements: -I would've liked to hear from the students first, before the principal. When you show the impact of the policy in place, it tends to catch the viewer's attention, especially if they relate. -Stand up from the reporter would've been great! it establishes who the reporter is and who's telling the story.
