Student produced and directed swim meet, with full student announcing. Graphics were custom made by students for this swim meet.
Positives: Cool use of graphics throughout this segment. Swim can be difficult to grasp and understand, and it was clear this crew came in prepared. Announcers were well informed on the meet and swimmers. You can tell they knew the sport and brought energy into this show.
Improvements: Audio could have used some slight adjustments as the announcer audio sounded slightly to loud and only came in on the right channel. If possible keep an eye on the mixer and adjust audio as necessary. The custom graphics were a good addition and looked professional, but may have been slightly too large (right side gfx). Think about how you can make this look more like a scorebug. Typically in swimming your scorebug can be a lower left box with the player names, the heat number, clock, etc, all together.
Positives: - First off, I love the coverage for a non-traditional sport. We don't see a ton of that at the high school level, so I'm really impressed that you took it on. Kudos! - The announcers are doing a nice job, especially covering what I'm sure was a long day where there really wasn't much time at all between heats, which is never easy. I'm always a fan of using names to refer to people whenever possible so I would've loved a little more of that instead of just "lane X", but things are moving quick and you did a nice job of keeping up overall.
Improvements: - This is a really tough sport as a director to time and gauge when you can cut off your primary camera. Once I figured out this was a bit of a longer event, I didn't mind most of your ISO shots of just a single lane (there is still part of me that worries I'm missing something happening in the overall race) because they were a good way to work in your other camera and your graphics, which were a nice touch. The major exception here was the very end of the race - without staying on your primary camera, we weren't able to see the wall touch and how close the finish actually was.
Positives: Great sound! Very well mixed announcer sound with pool sounds mixed in. Directing was great. I liked the shot selection and good cuts between the different shots.
Improvements: Announcers are knowledgeable but it kind of seems like you aren't excited about swimming. I would add more emotion to the announcing. Talk about the emotions, the intensity, the stakes, and the narratives of swimming... not just factual information. 2:05 when the swimmers finish the race, the camera misses the most crucial moment of the race (the photo finish!). I think the camera was just about 4 feet behind where it should have been in this moment. Still great camera work overall, though.
