  • 4/29 1:30 pm - This is an excellent cinematography reel! It showcases a wide diversity of shots, situations, and genres! Moreover, it delights in all things that represent cinematic shooting including focal length, composition, framing, and so on and so forth. Excellent work!!!
  • 4/28 3:01 pm - This was a fantastic watch! You did a wonderful job mixing the high-energy motion of the racing shots with a variety of other footage, which kept the reel from feeling repetitive. Your 'Editing' score is particularly strong here because the rhythm of your cuts worked so well with the music—that dip to black halfway through was a really sophisticated touch that showed a great sense of pacing. This is the kind of 'creative innovation' we look for in our top-scoring entries. To keep leveling up, think about how the lighting in those racing shots can be used to even greater effect. Maybe try capturing some 'golden hour' motion or using a polarizing filter to cut down on reflections on the cars. You’ve already shown great 'visual fluency,' so now it’s just about adding those extra layers of professional polish to your lighting.
  • 4/6 2:20 pm - PROS This reel displays a high level of technical proficiency, particularly in low-light and night-time environments. The opening astrophotography sequence effectively captures the stars through a framed canopy of red leaves, showcasing a strong grasp of long-exposure techniques. The use of lens flares and high-contrast lighting during the racing pit-stop sequences (0:20) creates a highly cinematic and professional atmosphere. The tracking shots of the race cars (0:13) demonstrate an ability to keep fast-moving subjects in sharp focus while maintaining smooth camera movement. IMPROVEMENTS While the lighting is often a strength, some of the daytime shots, such as the park scene at 0:09, push the boundaries of overexposure in the highlights. Managing the dynamic range in these high-sun scenarios would help preserve detail in the brightest areas of the frame. There is also an opportunity to experiment more with varied focal lengths. While the wide and medium shots are executed well, incorporating more extreme close-ups could add more emotional weight and detail to the overall narrative. OVERALL This is an exceptionally polished reel that stands out for its visual consistency and technical ambition. The filmmaker shows a sophisticated understanding of how to use light and color to create a specific mood, especially in challenging night conditions. By refining highlight management in bright environments and diversifying shot scales, the work would achieve an even higher level of cinematic depth and professional polish.

Positives: It is clear you chose lighting/camera] techniques that elevate the footage, rather than just choosing them for looks. Grouping the shots by palette/mood creates a cohesive, professional feel and showcases a very clear artistic style

Improvements: A softer focus was used where it may have not been intended. Greater amount of scene sample may have helped the overall score.

Positives: Nice range of work showcased here. Everything is technically very good; correctly exposed, in focus, stable, and well-colored. Excellent use of available light.

Improvements: Be mindful of your horizon level, some of your shots are slightly off level which can be disorienting. I'd like to see more intentionality in your work. While most clips here are very pretty they do little in the way of conveying story. Each decision you make regarding framing, lighting, focus, etc should drive the story forward.

Positives: Your shot variety is a huge plus for your reel, the shot @1:29 is just lovely. That's what a reel is suppose to be! A showcase of the work you want to aspire to do. Enjoyed the car shots.

Improvements: Quiet a few shots like the one @0:33 are distractingly unlevel. It's okay and good to have a dutch angle shot used sparingly. I worked on a set where the Director wanted the entire shoot to be dutch to give a meaning of unease. The problem was some shot were slightly off and because every shot was like that it looked like we didn't know how to level of camera instead of a conscious choice.

Positives: Great sense of movement in your wide shots. Thank you! That opening shot is awesome! Again I love the lights! Overall, I love the steadiness of your moving shots. I'm guessing you used different techniques to achieve those. 0:59 love this silhouette.

Improvements: Strong reel. I wouldn't change much, but I would suggest including some faces. Mediums and close-ups. I'm guessing that's not your forte, but I would work on producing some for your reel. Bravo! theojams@gmail.com
