Entry Description

The JCA Hillzone is the Joliet Catholic Academy Student Cheer Section. They go to the sporting events to cheer on their classmates. They travel together and they show their school spirit by dressing in matching dress themes. Senior traditionally apply to be leaders of the JCA Hillzone. In this promotional video, juniors, Mary Jo Meyer, Bella Berta, and Lilly Van Tassel, interview Hillzone leaders, dance team, and cheerleaders at the JCA vs Providence Football Game to show why the Hillzone is so special. They also include grade school students who want to attend JCA in on the fun. They have the Hillzone cheer to demonstrate JCA's school spirit.

  • 4/23 12:10 pm - STORY: I think you had a lot of interesting questions asked that prompted some great answers from the people you interviewed! One thing to think about is how you actually want your video to look like. Meaning, plan out your video from start to finish (with details!). You should know when you want to include certain questions, or when you don’t need to introduce people again in the video. Storyboarding can help! Think about the questions that you ask during interviews. Do you really want to ask questions that only allow people to give you a yes or no answer? You have a lot of these when you interview the future students that will attend the school. Draft questions that will give you detailed answers, or ones that will give you that “why” answer. It will give you a lot more substance to work with rather than just getting a yes or no answer (which can be awkward). SOUND: Your audio levels are kind of all over the place. I think you do a good job of keeping most of your interview clips at a louder level, however you do want to make sure that your audio levels are consistent throughout your video. Your audio mix, especially dialogue/narration should fall between -12 db and -6 bd on your sound meter. I do hear distortion in your interview clips from the mic (especially at 0 to 0:06), meaning that your audio most likely peaked at the time of recording. You never want your audio to hit 0 bd. That’s when you get that distortion in your audio. Make sure that you do have someone monitoring audio! It would also be nice to include music throughout your video. Use the music at the end of your video as a music bed under the interviews. It will give your video more substance and life! CAMERA: You utilize a lot of the same shots throughout your video which consist mainly of wide shots and medium shots. It would be nice to include closeups, especially when you interview the dance and cheer teams. LIGHTING: You utilize light well in most clips! Your lighting is pretty dark at 1:52. It is hard to see the reporter’s face here. In this situation, just flip your interview around! Currently, as is, you’ve got your camera facing a light and your reporter facing away from the light. This is why she has a shadow on her face. EDITING: I think you did a great job piecing together a lot of the interviews! I would say that some of the shots hold for too long. Again, make sure that you actually plan out and storyboard what you want in your video. Some of this does feel like it was added on last minute. For example, have a list of the same questions that you ask everyone no matter if they are a current student, dancer, or future student. Especially since you have the lower thirds (which are a great touch), you don’t have to ask future students if they are attending the school if you already have that in their lower third. Also, if someone doesn’t give you the best answer in a group interview you don’t necessarily have to include their answer. If you include 1-3 answers from each group interview that is fine! Additionally, the clip at 0:43 I would just use as extra b-roll instead of having it fully play out. I would include this as b-roll over the interview of the cheer group leaders. In fact, as mentioned under Camera, don’t be afraid to layer over b-roll while your interview clips play out!
