Neuqua Valley
Natural Audio News Package
Entry Description
Neuqua Valley Senior, Gabi Karvelis, created her own small baking business over the summer. She balances her new venture with her already busy schedule of school, sports, and high school life. I created this news package to highlight her exciting business and passion for baking.

- 4/23 3:40 pm - Great sounds throughout, I loved how you used the sounds as transitions at some points (39)
Your B-roll was very diverse throughout (close-ups, wide shots, etc) I didn’t ever really feel like I was looking at the same shot twice which is a challenge when you are working in such a small location. Great job. Some of the stills you use can become a little more engaging by using a subtle Ken Burns effect.
Your story was easy to follow and logically put together, you thought of your audience as the story unfolded and what they would like to know next I didn’t really fell like I was left with any unanswered questions after the story. You obviously cut up her interview at time the inflection was wrong as you pieced it together. You can hide that by putting a longer piece of b-roll between interview clips so there is more of a pause.
The story seemed to end a little abruptly I would have loved a closing line about “seeing where this takes me” or “what the future might look like”, it just kind of suddenly ended.
Finally while not necessary I would have loved a customer or friends in the kitchen talking about how good her baking is.
- 3/4 11:30 am - I liked the variety of sounds you played in this story and how you opened with the sound of the stand mixer. This helped to set the context for your story. What other sounds of the kitchen could you incorporate? Perhaps a beeping oven or spoon on the side of a bowl. Your interview was cut together nicely to explain her business. For your interview shot, I would lower the tripod a little bit to eliminate some of the headroom in the frame. I would also add some motion to your still images using keyframes. Overall, this was a well done nat audio piece!

Positives: Great nat sound opening. Nice variety of wide, medium and tight shots.
Improvements: I would have liked to see more video b-roll than pictures in the beginning. It would have been nice to hear from a client of hers and what they like about her baked goods.

Positives: Great job moving around the kitchen and getting a variety of shots of Gabi baking. I like that you included photos of some of her creations. I love that you asked her a question beside the mixer. Would've loved to see more of that! Great closing shot of the finished product.
Improvements: Next time, try to build sequences in your edit. You gathered some nice wide and tight shots, but your story had several jump cuts. Instead, here's an example of a simple sequence: close-up shot of Gabi's hands, cut to close-up of Gabi's face, cut to wide shot of Gabi working at the mixer.
Make sure to fade your audio in and out - especially with your natural sound. That will make the sound a little less jarring for the viewer.

Positives: *Good story development. I clearly understood why Gabi bakes and what it means to her.
*Nice job matching video to Gabi's words and also effective use of natural sound.
Improvements: *Editing could be enhanced by avoiding jump cuts. Cut aways can help move the subject from one location/task to the next, without a jump cut.
*Perhaps sound of someone talking about the quality of Gabi's baked goods could have expanded the already strong story.
