Live In Living Color done by Glenbrook South Singers and Dancers
Positives: Audio was mixed well able to hear the full ensemble of actors singing and the band nothing was over powering or competing. There were plenty of different camera angles to cut between.
Improvements: Not a lot of camera moments and framing was not always corrected as actors move out of camera frame. One of the cameras balance was off and had a canted angle, and the exposer of the cameras didn't match. Some had a brighter luminance than the others.
Positives: Very energic performance. Viewer felt the vibrations from the stage. Wide shot looks good, lighting was good. Audio is very good.
Improvements: No closeups of the opening performer. Most all cuts were late on music cues. Camera shots were not synced to the musical score. Director should have taken his cues from the score. It appeared s/he took shots on the fly. Where are the closeups? The mission of the director is to select the views for the audience and not just be a spectator of the event. This director had good material, but failed to make an impact on the viewer.
Positives: Good variety of wide, medium and close-ups. The crew had a LOT of moving targets throughout the number and you stayed with it. Really appreciate the effort in tackling such a difficult choreographed performance.
Improvements: So much of Directing is anticipating the action and having the camera meet the action as it's unfolding. In each "reveal" of a new singer we were either behind or searching for the action. Keep practicing - value every rehearsal and create an effective shot sheet and rundown to know what's about to happen to call the shots to the camera crew. Separately - and it's difficult with a chorus number - is managing audio levels when there a variety of solo singers and parts throughout the performance. Really good effort here, but also needed more practice to make the individual parts really land.
