4/23 3:56 pm - As a natural sound package you don’t really have any authentic sounds I would expect to hear at a wrestling match (for example a coach yelling out feedback, grunting, falling on a mat etc) instead I felt like the only real audio I heard was the music that was on in the background during practice. Try and be more intentional to pull in those authentic sounds.
Your interviews were good, and I appreciated you cutting them down, but hide the jump cuts (30, 46) with B-Roll and your audience will never notice.
Try and get more diverse B-Roll, it all kind of looked the same camera on a tripod stuck on a wide shot, be more intentional about getting close ups, cutaways, etc.
You have all the right ideas for the story, focus on the details and it will all come together for you.
3/25 6:58 am - Good focus of the story. When you’re editing, make sure that you have your audio coming out of both channels - left and right. The first interview was coming out of the right side and the 2nd interview was coming out of the left side - you want it to be stereo. There were a few jump cuts in your story - be sure to cover these up with b-roll. During the 2nd interview, once you cover her up with b-roll, there is no need to show her on camera again - cover the rest of her sound byte up with b-roll. I get that using a tripod in a wrestling room is tough, but how can you have steadier footage? Consider using a monopod, a hand-held stabilizer, a gimbal, etc. How can you use the natural audio in the story to help TELL the story? That’s the point of this category - it shouldn’t be completely told by the sound bytes, but the natural audio needs to play a part as well. Putting a wireless mic on a coach or on a player helps to put the viewer into the story more and allows us to hear what gets said during practice, etc. Make sure you are balancing your audio levels throughout your entire story - watch your VU meters when you’re editing.
3/4 11:32 am - I love the focus on your girls wrestling team. If possible, I would recommend having your interviewees wear their mic- this will give you an even more professional look. If you don't have clip on mics though, that's ok! I liked that you interviewed so many girls. For capturing b-roll, I would recommend moving around the gym a bit more. I felt like we were seeing practice mostly from the same angle. How else could you vary your b-roll. Since this is the nat audio category. I also wanted to hear more examples of nat sounds- what else could we hear during a practice? Coaches coaching, girls cheering each other on, ect.
