  • 4/23 8:22 am - There’s a lot to like here. The b-roll is thoughtfully selected and helps support the storytelling nicely. Camera composition throughout is strong, and both the lighting and audio are well-executed—great work on those fundamentals. One thing to keep an eye on in the edit is the use of jump cuts. These can be visually jarring when left exposed. A simple way to smooth them out is by layering b-roll over those transitions, maintaining flow while covering up the cuts. When using still photos that weren’t shot by your team, be sure to include proper photo credits. It’s a small detail, but it’s important for ethical storytelling and attribution. Interview framing can also be improved slightly. The people being interviewed should be positioned just off-center in the frame and directed to look slightly off-camera rather than straight into the lens. This simple adjustment creates a more natural and professional look. The anchors did a solid job with delivery—they come across clearly and with confidence. One area to work on is hand placement. Both anchors kept their hands hidden under the desk the entire time, which can come off as stiff or uncomfortable. It might feel awkward at first, but placing hands gently on the desk and incorporating natural gestures can enhance the sense of engagement. Great effort overall—just a few tweaks away from taking your production to the next level.
  • 3/3 7:17 am - The first second or so was cut off of the program. Good b-roll and camera composition. Audio is good along with lighting. Watch the jumpcuts avoid these by putting b-roll over them. You should also have photo credits on the photos you did not shoot. The people you interview should be a little off center and should be looking just off of camera. Anchors did a nice job but one thing they can work on is what to do with their hands. Both of them spent the entire time with their hands under the desk. It is an awkward thing at first, but practice having them on the desk. Watch some professional newscasts to see that these anchors do.

Positives: Jersey Swap is a very creative idea. The fun b-roll shots of the student-athletes posing in front of the lights, the energetic music and dynamic graphics showed strong production values. Great effort collecting so much b-roll for the Winter Wonderfest package and the photos from the veterans’ service.

Improvements: Your packages would have benefited from more storytelling. Adding a reporter and more interviews could have been used to tell the story of how Winter Wonderfest is put together or why it’s special to attendees. A reporter would’ve helped segue between the interviews in the veterans piece. Few news programs are just a string of news packages. Have the anchors deliver some school news, a sports report or weather. A variety of news elements will help create a more well rounded program.

Positives: excellent choice of stories. the package on teachers who are veterans was excellent and could be done at every school. also, great choice of characters in both the veterans and the sports stories. camera work and sound were first-rate.

Improvements: the anchors were very good but sounded a bit scripted. this might be a case where they would be better off in some of their intros by going off notes instead of a script - it might make them more conversational. also, while i loved the creativity of the sports package, there was a little too much friendly trash talking - "my sport is harder than your sport." May have been better if, for instance, they asked each other what's the toughest thing about your sport?

Positives: Things That Worked Well U.S. Military Veterans Story Engaging introduction from the hosts. Jersey Swap Story Interesting concept with strong potential. Snippets of pictures with sound effects add a nice touch. Cool visuals in the opening. Overall Well-done camera shots and concepts.

Improvements: Things That Could Be Improved Hosts Add natural banter to make delivery feel less rigid. Show expressions and acknowledge each other while speaking. Winter Wonderfest Story Interviewee should look at the interviewer, not the camera. Quick cuts between interview and b-roll feel disjointed. Story loses focus—consider interviewing event staff for more context. Some shots feel random and not intentional. U.S. Military Veterans Story Alan Nolan restating the question slows pacing—cut directly to response. Slow zooms on interviews feel unnecessary. Limited images of interview subjects—following them around could add depth. Background music is too strong—lower volume or remove it when multiple people speak. Jersey Swap Story Introduction is too long—tighten this section. Interview lighting is too dark. Camera angles should capture both individuals and cut between them as needed. Purpose of the jersey swap is unclear—hosts should explain it. Background audio makes it difficult to hear interviews—adjust or remove. Overall Unclear who created each piece—consider having hosts introduce the reporter or adding credits. Storytelling needs more structure—focus on key points for clarity.
